Active EMGs seem to be sealed up pretty tight.

They can not be swapped. They are sealed in epoxy if I remember right.

cant take em off without breaking the pickup. says it on the emg website. my buddy has a project that he wants to get emg style covers so the cheap PUs look good lol.

Yes, it can be done. All you need to do is get ahold of the right covers like the HZ (I've never owned HZs so I don't know if they are just like normal EMGs) and then carefully remove the "covers" from your 81/85. I did this to an 81/60 set and put some old gold covers on...it looks great! I'll post up some pics later.
