Can I color these pickup coils?

Re: Can I color these pickup coils?

Perhaps its OCD...I completely understand wanting to cover up the green. Does it affect the tone at all? Not intrinsically. But if it affects you then it is in one way or another affecting the overall guitar playing. I don't see it as shallow (I'm a stickler for color combos myself.)
Thank you for reassuring rather than mocking me!

Re: Can I color these pickup coils?

I would be worried attempting to drop paint into pickup coils. If it were mine, I'd just cut between 3/4" - 1" length of black pickup tape, fold it into a V shape and try to slide it in and apply to just that end where the green showing. To me that would be reversible and potentially less harmful to the pickup.

I had just decided to try something like this! Not sure why it did not occur to me at first. Early senility?

Re: Can I color these pickup coils?

You can also cut some black foam to fit the v shaped cavitys and stuff it in.

Not a bad idea. It's also reversible, should you change your mind. And it's cheap.

Yep. I have not been home the past couple days but this is my Plan A.
I appreciate everyone talking me through to the most common sense approach.

Can I color these pickup coils?

I have three Bill & Becky Lawrence L500 pickups in two guitars and I love them except the coils seem to be covered with green tape or cloth. It's not so bad on this guitar but the other one has a red casing, and when I look down it's like Christmas in July.
Can I use some India ink or black paint to carefully cover where the green shows without ruining my pickups.
The Wilde pickups are glued together so I can't just remove the bezel and tape over the green.View attachment 90728

I had brown pickup tape which I carefully removed and replaced with black. Not because I wanted black ( the pickups are brown) but I was mag swapping and the tape was no good to reuse)

Is it definitely glued and not wax?

Either search for pickup tape and pay through the nose or use tape for winding transformers etc in laptops - same thing but cheaper:

Re: Can I color these pickup coils?

And the winner is...tape! The black foam kept falling into the crevice so I cut a small piece of electrical tape and carefully pressed it into place. So now when I play, instead of photo 1 I see photo 2. Not only is the green gone but the cream and dark red really pop.

That looks great!
Let’s see the entire guitar! That metal guard has me intrigued!!

Re: Can I color these pickup coils?

Thank you! I just put it together this year. 1990s Warmoth 24.75" maple/rosewood neck I modified, eBay alder Tele body I modified, the Wilde L500XL pickup, Gotoh wrap around bridge, and the pickguard I made from a perforated aluminum baking pan.

(Sorry about the sideways photo, I don't know how to fix that!)

I have a very similar bridge that I put on my LP Special except mine is a Schaller. Great bridge.
I like that pickguard. I like anything unique.

Cool looking guitar! Any clips playing it? And congrats on getting the color fixed!
