Turn around times is within the same week if I get it say on a Monday....PM me for pricings and furthers...Also do a search under DS1 Mods for more scoop on the pedal mods....Saves me all the redundant typing! :laugh2:

I've got one and it sounds like a tube amp. But, a simple, old-school tube amp. And I'm playing it through a tube amp. It's pretty...generic though, so keep that in mind. And you'll probably want to crank the gain and keep the tone turned down, when you turn the tone up it gets really harsh sounding.

I got my DS-1 modded by Mr. Spina and i still use it as a 'tone conditioner.' I do notice that the cleans aren't as 'nice' but that just gives me more options.
With the pedal on it's like i've got a brutal, cranked JCM800-ish tone that i can clean up with the volume knob...with the pedal off i've got a cranked 67 Bassman with just the right level of tube distortion. I can go from 60's garagerockin to modern stoner/doom without touching the amp or pedal.
Another cool thing about Spina's mod is the gain knob actually has too much gain for the rest of the pedal. So where most pedals are maxed out, you've got about a quarter of a turn left that boosts the signal into fuzz territory...ALMOST enough to negate my craving for a Big Muff, but just enough to keep me satisfied.
If you ask me it's a solid pedal. Stock it just sounds like distortion, with mods it just gets better.

The DS1 has been an industry standard for distortion for 25 years or so now.... No you can't go wrong buying one for $40..... they do their job of adding some fuzz.... thru some amps they make an almost Marshall sound, and thru others they can be too fuzzy.... it depends on the amp. I have owned a bunch of them over the years... i still have my early 80's one and a new one.... to tell the truth i can not hear an audio difference in the 2... some cliam the old ones are the better ones but to my ears i can't hear the difference... I use the DS1 in the clean section of my Classic 30 and my Fender 65 Deluxe.....
The DS1 being a cheaper pedal it also has some noise that can be expected..... Not that this noise is different from all cheaper distortion boxes, all of the cheaper ones have that noise and hum. Not just the DS1. I found a company called Diamond Pedals out of Halifax Canada that makes a pedal called the Fireburst... to me it sounds like a DS1 but has no hum or noise that all the cheaper pedals have. You can have it turned on thru a loud amp and there is almost no hum from the pedal... the sales rep says the noise difference is because of higher quality parts... But they are not cheap pedals either! $250 Canadian is the list..... i'm sure it'll be less then that in the USA for sure... close to your $200 mark....
DS1 is great cheap fuzz but the Fireburst is much better but much more expensive.... I like my DS1's.... maybe you will too!

hey Whofan, thats a good illustration there =)
I was intending to get a DS-1 also, as like what the rest say, get it modded and so be it. Perhaps modding will give you better parts in it and will prolly reduce the hum and buzz also.
Furthermore it looks more vintage than the DS-2
