CAn I swap out P100's for P90s in my LP SPecial?

Just curious if this can be done without modifying the guitar. Will I need different pots and all that for the P90s?

Yes, it's a direct swap- UNLESS your pickup routs aren't deep enough. That's not something I've run into though.

If you've got 500K volume pots, you'll be good.

I am assuming this is one of the 90's Specials that came with P100's and the TOM...in which case 300K pots are stock. Get some CTS 500K pots...

I'm good with reading...

I know you meant to say "take out the P-100s and put in P-90s..." I was just testing you...

You'll need something to shim the pickups up to height. In the past I used to use rubber tubing around the mounting screws under the pickup. That's kind of a pain, so I've taken to using mousepad foam. I also know people that have used wooden shims.

I thought 250k pots usually went with single coils...

Do you guys think P-90s sound better with 500k pots?

Although I have never had P90s myself, I have heard it is best to use 500k pots, and if you dont like it balance it out with some different caps.
Or you could play it safe and use 300k pots, if you can find them.

When folks talk about the rule of "250k for single coils", it really means Fender single coils.

P90's are a different animal, much beefier, especially when they're over 9k, so you can use 500k pots, although this is really a matter of personal taste. If your guitar is unusually bright and/or you want a smoother/rounder tone, 250-300k pots would be fine.

FWIW, I tend to prefer 250-300k pots with both P90's and humbuckers, unless the guitar's natural tone is unusually dark.

First - you MUST for the love of tone lose the P-100's. If anything the cavity will be too deep! P-100's are stacked I believe.

And - that guitar likely has 300k pots already. You can always turn the tone down on a 500k though...

And I prefer the 300k for scorching buckers in the bridge - but they might be good for the custom P-90 as well. I like 500k in the neck. But with P-90's who knows. Try what you have and see if you like it first.
