Can i ?
I heard numerous opinions that i can and can't
I have lemon oil i bought from a local guitar shop here that contains petroleum distillates, is it ok to apply it to the maple fingerboard ? or only for rosewood ?
The reason for lemon oil or similar products for ebony or rosewood is that those two woods are not sealed. Your maple fretboard IS sealed so it does not need to be conditioned from time to time like ebony or rosewood.
Tung Oil uses Gunstock oil if I remember correctly.
Honestly...with a standard maple neck....you could take a leak on it and it would achieve the same effect as using lemon oil or anything else. The only reason you should need to put ANY liquid on there ever is to loosen up gunk for cleaning.
I use lemon oil on my maple fingerboard guitars...doesn't hurt it and makes it smell nice! I use the Parker and Bailey brand because it is non-toxic and non-flammable and is really just mineral oil/baby oil. The stuff that's flammable is made from something else...some kind of petrolium product. The finish on my maple fingerboard guitars is pretty thin and worn off...so some oil gets in there to the wood.
Tung Oil is not recommended because it takes forever to dry and just sits on the surface for a week or two before drying.
It's a great finish...I finish my furniture with it...but it's not a great conditioner or polish to apply TO an already finished piece of wood.
You know, I'm a wood guy. I design custom furniture for a living...
So i should leave the oil on the fretboard for 20-30 mins each time i clean it for best results ? (i've got two other guitars with rosewood, one's a SG the other some cheap RG270)
