Can Wine Damage a Pup?

My son spilled some on my guitar, and now the neck pup is maybe half as loud as it was, if even that. Maybe a quarter; it's a lot quieter than my Strat pups. It's uncovered, and I wonder if the coils got damaged, or maybe something got somewhat shorted to ground? At least it now has a clearer tone, lacking woof or wool...

Yes, liquids are not good for pickups...and children shouldn't be drinking wine.

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

Agreed! Nor should they be running in the house where they can bump into a table and spill things when you've gotten up to answer the phone...

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

How much do I need to spill exactly? What type, Red or white?
Well, for optimal results, it should be 3.2 ounces in a random burst of a cheap red (my doctor said I need to drink more, go fig) -- and make sure to soak the friggin' carpet also...

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

Ah well.. I've been looking for an excuse to try a JazzN anyway.

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

Pull the pickup and dry it out. It soundsto me like there's liquid still inside the pickup shorting something out internally.

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

It may not be permanently damaged. Let it dry for awhile and check the output with a multimeter. It's just some liquid, and there are only wires and a magnet inside the pickup. There's not a lot that can really be damaged in the first place, so maybe letting it dry will fix things naturally...

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

Cool; I'll definitely see what develops. Can't afford another pup anyway. Thanks

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

If you dont get the tone your after, soak it in Stoli Vodka.( thats what i do..well, actaully i get soaked with Stoli Vodka and it seems to improve the toen on everything).PS... dry it out b4 firing her up.

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

i wouldnt soak a pup in anything, if the insulation gets stripped off the wire you are screwed

Re: Can Wine Damage a Pup?

That's true; rice is great for that. In the meanwhile, I finally pulled the trigger and bought a JazzN to replace the pup (stock PRS SE) -- what a difference! The mud, woof, and wool are completely gone; maybe too gone. lol Its frequency and touch response please me, although I'll probably try an A4 mag in there, but it's a keeper. This guitar is heavy on the lower mids, and I play rather delicately; the result is a well-balanced, refined bell tone that pops out but lets me dig in and get dirty.

Heh; I should probably wait until the honeymoon is over, but this pup really pleases me. I'm pretty sure it's like Mexican food -- works in any setting, and kicks ass in all of them.

The bridge pup (stock) sounds kinda ratty in comparison. Not to hijack my own thread, but does anybody want to make any suggestions? I thought about a Custom coil or JB, with A4 or A3, but I'm not big on high-gain pups; the JazzN seems a bit hot to me. So maybe a JazzB? Or a PG? Not an AIIPro; it's heresy, but I hate Slash's tone. :ban:
