Can you dye rosewood?

Well...can you? It would be cool if I could dye rosewood black like ebony. Pretty simple question, really, is it possible and does it work?

I have never stained a guitar fretboard but I imagine you could. I believe most rosewood is stained on guitar fretboards so you should be able to darken it.

The fretboard on my SG-X is dyed. I don't see myself doing it (unless it was a REALLY ugly piece), but if you like it go for it! You will need to mask off the fret markers and anything else you do not want stained.

What would you use and how would you go about doing it? I've got a 98 Les Paul with a really light board. I guess that's "one of those things" that came on the all red flametops, and I don't really view it as a good thing.

There's special ebony dye, but I've also heard of people using a vinegar and steel wool concoction.

Re: Can you dye rosewood?

Well I mean, it's not that I have an ugly piece of rosewood, it's that every rosewood fretboard in existence is ugly in my opinion. I would want to dye it completely black to look like ebony. I don't know if using that ebony dye would work or if there is something else I could use.

Re: Can you dye rosewood?

in my experience dyed rosewood doesn't feel the same way as the natural one. I have a ovation copy which has a black dyed rosewood board. It feels like rosewood but it's lost that a bit of it's soft feeling compared to the natural woods. it just feels a bit rougher. But it looks good.

Re: Can you dye rosewood?

Alright cool, I knew about that ebony dye (due to Xeromus' recent ebony disaster!), I just didn't know if rosewood was funky in some way. Thanks for the help.
