Can you fix a broken magnet?

THE DUG

ok, so i was swapping out an A2 mag and it broke into 3 pieces.it was really brittle, hell i bought the pup used maybe it was already broke.anyway i was thinking some super glue action and see if it works.the pieces fit together pretty well, so i was wondering if this mag is junk now or if it can be repaired.has anyone else tried or had to put one back together?i know i could just buy a new one for $6 or so but id like to try and fix this one first.

Super Glue will probably be your best shot, but I´m not sure it will work...

FWIW

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

Hey, while we are at it, I've heard warnings that cutting or breaking rare earth magnets is dangerous for health- Anyone ever heard this? Cancerous dust or something? Or did I misunderstand?

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

As far as I know, it won't work. You'll be attaching similar poles.

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

I didn't think Alnico Mags where so Brittle? A ceramic without a doubt would break.

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

I remember reading somewhere, someone successfully bonded a A5 and A2 magnet on a dimarzio pickup. A2 on the High strings, A5 on the low strings.
Not sure what he used though.

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

no, it wont work. the moment you break a magnet they become standalone magnets and you wont be able to join them together again

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

You're better off buying a new one. And, as for the health risk, my guess is you'ld have to have long term exposure to particles. We've all handled magnets countless times without apparent problems...or maybe it's that the problems won't show up for many many years!:scared:

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

It wont work! I have one right here in front of me and when I push it back together where it broke the poles oppose each other! That usually weakens a magnet big time! Time to buy a new magnet!

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

Normal Alnico dont effect health they consist of nickel, cobalt, aluminium and sometimes titanium - all day metals. I am quite sure that you have brocken a ceramic magnet (dull grey and light weight). To break an alnico by chance and without force is nearly impossible.

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

the mag in question came out of a PG bridge and it is marked with blue on one end.is that a ceramic then?or is it A2?or something else?BTW i did super glue it the other night and it seems to be holding well,i checked it with my polarity tester and its reading all north on one side and all south on the other.i may get a chance to put it in one of my pups today just for s@#$s and giggles just to see if it works or not.but if one of guys could fill me in on the color code for SD mags that would be great.i bought the PG pup in question on ebay so now im wondering if i got ripped off.thanks.

Re: Can you fix a broken magnet?

If it is broken by blunt force then it is at least partially demagnetized. You would have to recharge it.
