Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

If you had the right pickups in a thin body Ibanez, such as 59's or a JB/Jazz combo, can you still get good full tone from a thin body, bolt neck, floyd equipped guitar, such as Ibanez?

Re: Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

I hope so, cos I sold my Heritage Les Paul this evening and the Ibanez S470DX will be here Friday ;) :D

I feel careful pickup selection will certainly help, at times greatly so. I've really been absorbing all the posts here and researching reviews and whatnot in order to combat that very thing because there are so many pickups on the market today. The good thing about the Ibanez S series is they have a Mahogany body so I would think that should help despite the small stature. I know it won't ever sound like a Les Paul, but if I can get as good sounds out of it as I got out my Duncan JB equipped Deluxe Strat plus, I'll be a happy camper! :D

Re: Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

I think you COULD get a thick sound from a guitar like that but it depends more on the amp... surprisingly the amount of bass an amp carries really has a lot of impact on your tone.

Re: Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

i have a 4-wire '59 (n) and a C5 bridge in my Ibanez 540s ... the '59 is HUGE and the C5 really tamed the overly bright (almost nastily so) bridge while retaining plenty of balls and 'cut' ...

yeah - totally doable

enjoy

Re: Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

Sure...if the guitar itself has a great natural resonance to it. Isn't an SG only 1 1/4" thick? Clapton, AC/DC, the Who...all got big resonant tone out of thier thin bodied SG's.

I have 59's in my Strats with humbuckers and they sound plenty thick and fat to me.

I don't own any Ibanez guitars or Floyd Rose equipped guitars though.

Sometimes I think a Floyd and locking nut can be a little bit of a string energy sucker...

Again...Lew comes through with good info! :laugh2:

Re: Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

Not with a Jazz pickup. Try a APHII and a CC...the Jazz sounds way to bright to be 'jazz' at all.
I use this combo in my Ernie Ball, and I can *clone* an ES-175 jazz sound.

Re: Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

I have an RG570 (I know, thicker than the S series), and it can sound thick & chunky as hell. I had a DiMarzio Evo in it, and it sounded good, not thick. Tossed in an Invader, and WHOOAAA!!! The DiMarzio Air Norton in the neck is pretty thick, too :)

Would you (or anyone else) know how the C5 compares tone-wise to the Standard Custom? I'm quite familiar with the customs in Les Pauls and Explorers but not in bolt on neck guitars...I was thinking of going with something "beefy" like the custom in my S470DX, but I thought it may also get too treble-y. I've listened to the Duncan sound clips on the site here, but that's through a gibson.

The only Custom I've ever heard in a Bolt on neck was Vivian Cambells work on The Last in Line (Dio)...and the production wasn't so hot on that album.

Re: Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

Gibson SG. One of the thinnest production guitars around, and you can get ultrathick tones out of it. `nuff said? ;)

Ups , just saw LEW was faster :D:D:D

Re: Can you get a full thick sound from a thin body?

For the current S series, I like the APHn, APS mid, and CC combo. Thick sounding with lots of mids and rolled back highs. This combo puts the beef back into the Saber. :burnout:

The SG if amplified properly can get a very thick sound, the examples you mentioned are perfect AND one real shocker was jazz/fusion guitarist John Abercrombie, who managed (back in the 1970's) to make his Melody Maker-SG sound like an archtop! It's all down to amp and speaker choices.

agreed, and also PICK UPS do have an impact on the oversund as well. Everything must be taken into account. You can get a fat tone out a strat, and they aren't really known for that but with the right pick ups and amps, and pissble pedal you can get a good sound thats chunky. Look at the tom delonge strat, it has an invader and that thing was SUPER CHUNKY. The SG is anohter example, but Lew has already explained that.

I have a duncan custom in my standard SG....and I get an awesome thick distortion out of my DSL100

I have the same pup in my am strat and it also sounds great...but has a darker more bassier tone. The SG sounds clearer.
