can you hear a speaker about to blow?

really wanting to get a greenback but just have it in a 1 x 12" configuration to use with lower wattage amps (lower and right at its capacity), but occasionally I'd like to use it with a higher powered amp (rated well over it's capacity) but in that scenario really keep the volume to a normal bedroom level.

so I'm wondering - can you hear a speaker about to get fried and save it/stop it from getting wrecked? I can understand blowing it up by hitting it with a ton of wattage right off the bat, but if you're creeping up the volume slowly, wouldn't you hear it getting overloaded a bit before it goes and be able to back it off for use?

Re: can you hear a speaker about to blow?

I've only blown on speaker before. I could hear it coming on.

No, you are not going to be able to do that. If you "hear something", you have already done damage.
The only thing I have ever heard guys talk is how good their speaker sounded before it blew.
Either use enough speaker(s) or be prepared to replace/recone.
good luck

if its a burned coil then no it will just stop working. A burned out coil is the most likely thing to happen when running a speaker above its rating because the wattage rating is an indicator of its ability to dissipate energy in the form of heat which is what will damage/break a coil.
If the cone is drying up or tearing you'll hear it.

You will not hear it before it blows. You will hear it as it blows, at which point you are too late. And you'll have confirmation of that when you smell it shortly after.

If you haven't bought it yet, try and find a new Creamback 65 instead. It handles wattage and has the greenback sound.

I think if I were looking for a do it all speaker for a 1-12 cab, I'd use an Eminence Swamp Thang. It's sort of like taking all the good points of the popular speakers and rolling it into one.

Thanks dudes - i see now I should think of those other options. I didn't realize that's what a cream back was.

They're expensive, but Scumback makes Greenback clones (M series) with a 55hz bass cone or 75hz guitar cone. They're available in either 8 or 16 ohm versions with 25, 65, or 100W power handling.

Cool - since it's just 1 speaker to rule them all, I could see splurging for a killer 1 x 12 cab setup.
