can you help me pick my next amplifier???

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

Since I play a LOT of 90s rock and grunge I think a nice saggy, dark amp will do best since I already the british thing covered with my Shiva and lovely PWE!
1998 Rectover Series I is amazing! I played my friends and was floored! Wow.

My Shiva is amazing and love it! I just like having variety to choose from!

Mwalluk...I had the Egnater Mod 50 and a lot of modules sounded similar. I think I had like 10 modules.

Gearjoneser is correct! I will never be all set. But isn;t that half the fun? Thanks for having a sense of humor about it. :)
Wampler Triple Wreck is a nice idea! But, I wold be happy being a Rectoverb to some gigs instead because it can just as easily cover Pearl Jam as it can tool. Love the classic rock tones I can get out of my friend's Rectoverb!

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

I'd be curious if any more comments on this one. My tastes have really changed and I am using less and less gain all the time and no metal any longer.....mostly rock, hard rock and clean/light crunch. Looking at some single channel amps now like the Fargen Classic and Olde 800!!!
Must work very well at lower volumes though. Don't need an amp that needs to be cranked to hit the sweet spot.

Looking for something perfect for tones like Matthew Sweet meets Counting Crows.

I would like to try to stay under $1000 used price.

Maybe even a used single channel head like a Dr. Z.

I will always recommend selling something and then getting the thunderverb for that heavy dark organic tone, over your shiva and everything else lulz it is the best :approve:

NO, I am not playing much high gain, why do you ask? Even when I do, I don't take my Shiva much past noon.

Thanks for the Orange Thunderverb recommendation but not a big fan of Orange amps.

Saggy? I have it covered. :)

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

I would look for a fully loaded Mesa Mark III combo with the EVM, EQ, reverb and Simul-Class, and then find a Mesa 112 EVM Theile cab. They are not that hard to run. With either 85 or 15 watts you have some versatility to play various rooms, and the Mark III can handle any genre. This combo-plus-cab with the EVMs can compete with any half-stack made, with a small stage foot-print. You can load it into a Civic with no problem. You can just grab the combo only and go to jam or practice--but it IS a heavy, professional-grade amp. The Theile underneath puts the controls at a nice height, and that closed-back ported cab adds a lot of low-end depth and projection to the combo.

The Mark IV is also good, but might not be in your price range. Definitely more tweakable, and it has more power amp flexibility. Both of these amps sound good at low volumes. Obviously, both have that great, singing Mesa lead tone, but with the R2 channel, you have some seriously fun mid-gain tones too.

I'd use a set of Winged C/SED 6L6s and EL34s in the Class A sockets, and you can play with various tubes in the preamp to give you the tone you want. Get the Reverb Mod done, and the R2 mod if you need it.

I would think you could fine a good Mark III cheaper and more easily than the ED. These are just very under-rated--I'd rather have a good Mark III or Mark IV than about 90% of the new amps made today.

If you don't need the power or the flexibility of the Mark Series, look for a Nomad 55, Nomad 45, DC-3, DC-5, F-30, or F-50 amps. These are all great amps that would compliment what you already have.

Good luck,

Bill

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

If you want low watts----

Mesa Mini Rectifier
Vox Night Train
Egnater Rebel 20/30
Orange Dual/Tiny Terror.

Those will probably get you any tones you want.

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

Vox Night train is interesting. Mini Recto too but is the mini recto all heavy metal and can it hang in a loud band setting.

Thanks Bill. I had a Mark IV but it was too body sounding. I thought the DC 5 was very loud. :)

So far the Electradyne is topping the list.

saggyy!?!??!? aaahhh!! :scratchch :)

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

I've got a mint Series 2 Rectoverb with new tubes that I would sell, let me know if you're interested.

It does a lot more than heavy metal and 25 watts is pretty effing loud so I'd say a band setting would be fine for the mini.

I agree but all the magazine and site reviews say it is a great amp if you need something for home or studio. I would imagine it is not as satisfying to play as the larger mpdels. I think it is el84, and hell so are AC-30s and I love those! LOL. I was considering this or the Electradyne.

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

A low-wattage alternative to the mini Recto would be the slightly more powerful 30 watt 4xEL84 TA-30. I like it better than the TA-15 or the mini-Recto, but I'm not sure it will fit into your budget.

I have both DC-3 and Maverick combos--both of these will hang with a loud band. A lot depends on speakers. I use the DC-3 112 V30 combo with a 112 EVM Theile; the 35-watt Maverick 212 combo sits on a horizontal Recto 212 for a nice, portable half-stack.

Get the new Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 36. That one has reverb. You'll even have a some money left for speakers or pickups since they only cost around $700.

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

The Mesa TA30 sounds harsh to me.

I want to check the H&K Tubemeister, but where is it made? Germany?

Last night at practice my Bogner Shiva was killing it!!!

What the heck are you running your Shiva through? The Shiva has the saggy and loose sound to a T, all you gotta do is tweak the settings to make it dark enough for your taste (I usually keep the presence down myself). If you don't use them already, I'd recommend Vintage 30s.

I really can't think of a better "dark and saggy" amp than the Shiva. I understand wanting an amp that's lower wattage, but the master volume is pretty darn good on it. This coming from a guy who's owned his EL-34 Shiva longer than anything else.

Is your PWE the 100w or 50w version? According to the website, the 50w can go down to 15w, which is a pretty good club range to be in (provided you don't need maximum headroom, but that's always going to be a sacrifice when you go down in wattage).

Nevertheless, going back to one of your earlier comments, you mentioned Counting Crows. Those guys used nothing, but Fenders when I saw them live and you're playing through British inspired amps, so I'd recommend changing it up and going for an American sound if that's your thing. However, I don't hear "dark and saggy" on those Counting Crow records myself, YMMV.

If you want a smaller wattage amp to crank, but want a fatter and darker sound then maybe you should look at tweed amps?

I gotta be honest, I'm a big roots rock/alternative guy and right now I'm sold on my AC15. While the Bogner's fat sound is addicting, I wanted something simpler with a thinner, more jangly tone that I could control multiple shades of dirt from my pick attack and controls and the Vox did it. I'm not trying to confuse you by throwing in something even more different in the mix, but I'd almost question if you really want something else that's dark and saggy when you've already got it.

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

Can you find one of the 20w Laney Lionhearts where you are? I don't know how they compare against some of the other stuff mentioned, I just know I like how they sound.

Re: can you help me pick my next amplifier???

When someone mentions the 90's, the first two amps to pop in my head are a Dual recto, and an SLO. The SLO would be my choice.
