Yes, but he's saying that it's an actual maple cap (1/4" thick or so), not just a veneer (more like 1/16" thick).

yeah... that what I meant. It's just not a really thick piece of maple, probably pretty thin becuase those S series are very thin guitars.

Like I said before, they're thin at the edges but they're actually pretty thick in the center. Probably a good 1.5" to 2" thick if I remember correctly, haven't played one in a while. That's one of my favorite guitar body shapes.

Re: Can you identify this wood from pictures?

this thread is making me miss my S series...it was my main guitar for years and one day i just decided to sell it lol. oh well i've moved on to better guitars but it sure was a great guitar IMO and mine wasn't even one of the crazy high end models.

It'd be killer if Warmoth would pick up that shape...

yeah, I thought they used to make RG bodies didn't they? An alder RG would be cool.

I just remembered, this was a MIJ custom Saber. Precursor to the S-series. The initial price for this axe was around $1,600 if I remember correctly from when I looked it up with ibanez.

Isn't a JEM7V basically an alder RG with a hole in it and an ebony board?

Lots of old Saber-shaped Ibanezes had "Custom Made" inlaid on the 22nd fret, but they weren't truly custom made. It looks like a 540S (not S-540, however those also had "Custom Made" on the 22nd fret), but I could be wrong..

Yeah they were production models., this one isn't a 540S though. That one was dual humbucker and had some differences. Hmm, you're right about that. They were still pretty pricey at the time though.
