Can you paint over the pole on a pickup?

I haven't seen any pictures online of anyone that painted over the poles when they paint a pickup , but can you and still have somewhat of your original tone? Has anyone done it and the pickup still sounded ok? I think it would look cool.

Thanks

It won't make any difference in tone unless the paint has a substantial amount of metal in it. As for pickups with painted polepieces, the Invader makes an excellent example. You should have no issues.

Thanks Chistopher, if it was something like a metalflake do you think it would make the pickup garbage?

Weren't lead paints outlawed a long time ago? Not only can you paint over them, you can use a Sharpie, rough them up and relic them, or put bobbin stickers over them if you want a different colored bobbin. The only thing that will actually change your tone a bit is putting a metal cover over the pickup.

Probably not. Consider the difference covers vs no covers makes to a pickup, and make that difference substantially smaller.

But I can't guarantee the aesthetic value of metalflake polepieces either.

Doesn't matter if the difference between cover vs no cover is widely perceptible. Take a poll if you don't believe it.

Back when I was young and had no money, I took a black JB, taped off the coils carefully with painter's tape, took the screws out of the top hold, masked off the slugs with micro mask, and rattlecanned a black JB into a white one. It turned out fine, didn't hurt the pickup at all.
