:smack:No question, just a really dumb idea!!!
So, I'm doing a relic job for my lead guitarist and best friend in the world, Dusty. Now the thing that you have to understand about Dustin is he's a musical genius and also one of those guys who playing guitar just seems to come naturally, like when you watch him play it almost pisses you off because he's so good & can do these amazing things without even thinking about it? We started playing about the same time and when I was learning Iron Man he was playing E.V.H. licks note for note! That was almost 20 years ago now & he's only gotten better! I think the fact that he doesn't think is what makes him so good! I'm not sure he could do these things if he was thinking, Dusty is a moron? I love him like a brother but he's just the dumbest smart person I've ever known! Alright, so I've done a few light relic jobs on a few of my guitars and about a week ago he asked if I'd do a MIM Strat he had just picked up from a pawnshop? So 2 days in & I called him up to tell him that the guitar was just about done, I had built a great new guard for it loaded with some new Duncan pups, & the relic job came out pretty good! So he says wait, & then stared talking about stickers? So he stops by, loves the way it looks, but has these stupid little bullet hole stickers? I'm sure you have seen them on junk cars, stuff like that? Anyway, I told him that they were going to look like S*** but it your guitar, he finally agreed with me & took the guitar. Just goofing around I'd said that I could put a few real ones in it for him if he wanted? So he calls yesterday, tells me he's thought about it, I'm not sure the word "thought" really sums it up but? He wants me to really shoot his guitar! Now I've shot a lot of inanimate objects, one of my favorite things to do so I know more or less what particular rounds do when they hit various materials? I said it was the dumbest thing I've ever heard him say over a lifetime of stupidity & even if I could get a round to go through & through without having it blow apart the exit hole was going to be ugly as hell? "Who cares" he says, it's the back anyway? I spent about half an hour trying to talk him out of it but to no avail, he wanted to shoot the guitar! I said that I didn't want to be responsible for the damage so he says that he's going to do it & he was going to use his 9mm, we went out back & I shot a plank of wood with my 9mm and it blew up? I explained to him that any bullet will likely have the same affect but if he really wanted to go through with it he needed to use a FMJ & it had to be moving very fast, which 9mm's don't do? Just to prove my point I shot the same plank with my .308 & it went through with minimal chipping on the back? This was a mistake, now he wants to borrow my rifle, NO!!! So after going back & forth a while he talks me into doing it, we put the body up against the wall of the sand pit, marked a spot where he wanted the hole, & I shot. The bullet landed right where he wanted it, a few inches above and behind the bridge? It actually looks kind of cool & even the exit wound wasn't that bad? I was just about to eat some crow when he asks if I can do one more down by the jack cavity? I said that he was lucky it still in one piece now & not to push it, he insisted that it would be fine, I was worrying about nothing, and that's what I said in the first place? Of course this was all before I put a .30 Cal projectile moving more than twice the speed of sound through it? He's paying me to do all this mind you, so all I can do is offer advice, he wants the second hole! So he make his mark, I put another FMJ in the chamber and pull the trigger! The round hit its mark dead on & the body breaks into several pieces & there's paint chips flying all over the place & he still had to fork over $100 for the relic job I'd done! The moral of the story is "shooting guitars is a bad idea"!!!!!
