Can't get push pull pot to put pickup(s) in parallel

Squier Jagmaster, HB103 with Alnico 5 in neck PU. Does the capacitor not being grounded on fender's diagram have anything to do with it?
I'm using the bottom pic for reference.

It is grounded. Through the pot. A tone control is a series connection. Variable resistor through a cap. Since they're in series, and it's an AC signal, it doesn't matter which comes first in the signal chain.

The wiring in diagram switches between series and parallel operation of bridge pickup. Doesn't have any effect on neck. It's correct.

Are you sure you have wired it right?

I used this diagram to wire my guitar. Just ignore the push pull that you don't want.
