Capacitors for SH-4 Bridge and APH-1 II pro neck Slash

Hi,

I need some advice. I'm putting in some new p/ups in a guitar (makes in title)I'm building and thought it'd be a good idea to put in some decent capactiors. Can anyone recommend a good type or brand? I've heard a .022 for the bridge and a .02 for the neck is a good set up to get a nice 50's les paul makeup and the P.I.O. type are ideal.

Don't want to blow the bank too much.

Any advice would be welcome :)

Man, we're talking 'bout five bucks here... if that's breaking the bank for you I can safely assume you're in big, BIG trouble! :naughty:

Joking aside, Sprague Orange Drop caps .022 600V is what you want. 'bout $ 1.50 a piece in any Radio Shack or electronic place.

If you feel generous with yourself, and considering Christmas is just 'round the corner, Sprague Vitamin Q .022 600V caps are very well considered by cork-sniffers.

I don't know the price out there, but I don't think they'll set you back more than $ 10.00 a piece.

All other russian military PIOs, bumble-bee replicas, and other esoteric stuff costing $ 50,00+ a piece is just a waste of money, as only your dog will be able to hear the difference, if there's any a all.

You've been warned! ;)

The result of this comment will probably be a bit more epic than needed, but I wouldn't worry about the cap. Get whatever is easy to solder in the cavity and has proper value. Neither maker nor material makes much of a difference. Just don't get electrolytic or tantalum caps as they, in theory, might add some distortions to the signal.

I completely agree with you on Orange Drops and not wasting money on the more expensive stuff - but why 600V? Won't that also need someone's dog to hear a difference from a 100V one?
A 600V one will also take up more room in the control cavity too will it not?

The voltages over the cap in practically any reasonable situation won't be over 3 volts, so the smallest cap you can find will suffice voltage vice. The 600V cap might be nicer to solder into the cavity, but othervice the voltage rating does not matter. With electronic components, size is reversely propotional to the actual performance. Smaller is better and surface mount are actually better than legged components, though the improvement in performance is not measurable unless the signals are in megaherz(10^6 Hz) range.

I'm with the Orange Drops .022. You could spend ten times as much as these cost, but I doubt you'll hear any difference between any caps of the same value, especially in a live performance setting. Orange Drops are great quality at a reasonable price.

Okay, here's my other question. I've also got two triple shot mounting rings. The wiring diagrams that seymour duncan have (http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/wiring-diagrams/schematics.php?schematic=2h_2ts_2v_2t) show two .047 caps. My knowledge on caps is very limited if not nil. I already have 2 x PIO .022 caps that I got from a music shop here in NZ. Will these be okay, or should I go with some .047 caps. And what differences can I expect between the two??

Thanks for your help on this guys. First guitar build and things are SLOWLY starting to come together nicely!!

Re: Capacitors for SH-4 Bridge and APH-1 II pro neck Slash

I think it depends on the guitar. SD recommends .047.
Most of my guitars have .022 except for my super strat. I've got a .047 in that one.
