Re: Carvin Acoustics?
This was inspired by the thread regarding used acoustics, and I didn't want to hijack, so I'm starting this one. In the other thread the OP discussed used acoustics in the 350-500$ price range, and Carvin is currently selling an acoustic (the C250) for $300, and while I normally wouldn't give it much of a second thought, it's credentials seem pretty solid: Solid wood top and sides, dovetail neck joint, AA spruce top. I got a chance to play a few of their acoustics at a carvin store when I was in california about a year ago, and I remember them as pretty fantastic instruments - in addition their electrics get a lot of good press. So I was wondering, does anybody have any experience with the Cobalt line of acoustics? Are they as well built as carvin's electrics? Are there any better deals for the price? As always, thanks for indulging my curiosity and all that stuff.
I've had the 980T and 980T12 for a couple of years now and I love 'em.
But then I seem to have a thing for Jumbo Cutaways.
What I discovered, around the time I was shopping, was that they are made for Carvin by Cort. So, they're a bit like the higher end Cort acoustics that are sold everywhere else around the world. Not sure if this is true for the entire line, but it would make sense.
I bought the 980T new from Carvin and the 980T12 off of eBay from a guy out west. Both for under $650 each, IIRC. Carvin will run some great specials.
The only other guitars I looked at were Takamine's (that Jumbo Cutaway thing) and as far as I can tell, nothing really compared until you went over the $1000 mark.
I'd really like a thinner necked 12 string(I have smallish hands), but from what I've played, those will run me $1500+ minimum.
My impressions of both: They're loud, clear and bassy. The electronics are good, but if I played out, I'd rather have the Fishman preamp with the microphone on the inside of the guitar. The piezoes can get quacky.
The necks and action are superb.
And they're surprisingly visually understated even with the gold trim and MOP inlays.
For sub-$500 acoustics, a used Taylor, if you can find one. is hard to beat, tho.
After that, the only ones that sound/felt good to me were the Takamines.
Good luck with your search.
