Carvin Guitars

Hey, what are your thoughts on Carvins. I have been looking at the DC-127, but it is neck-thru, and I am used to playing Jackson bolt-ons. Any help would be nice. Rock on.

Re: Carvin Guitars

Go for it if it floats your boat, but why not just get a Jackson of Charvel neck thru?

Carvins are nice, but I'm spoiled by MOP sharkies and bound ebony necks.

Re: Carvin Guitars

Carvin makes high quality guitars, and you can get just about any options you want. Prices are reasonable. What's not to like?

Re: Carvin Guitars

Go for it. I've got a dc135t and a dc727 and they're awesome guitars. The one thing that seems to be prevalent is that most people don't like their pups. I think their pups are ok, but some duncans are definitely an improvement.

Also, I really love the neck thru's. They have awesome upper fret access and they sustain forever.

Re: Carvin Guitars

Yeah, Ive always wanted a Carvin. Im going to start shopping for one as soon as I get a job.

Re: Carvin Guitars

They don't have much resale value, unfortunately, but sometimes you have to buy what works for you, rather than what it'll be worth in a year.

Re: Carvin Guitars

I have played um for years and owned as many as 14 Carvins at any one time (down to 2 right now) what do ya want to know bout um?
Here are a couple of thought on um. Great bang for the buck on the custom builds ( but they have lousy resale). If you do a custom build PM me first or at the least protect yourself if you get any non refundable options by having yiour sales rep email you the final option list before the build begins then KEEP the list copy!
I prefer the tone of the pre 95 guitar without the tone sucking graphite rods.
I also prefer the 24.75 scale 88-92 neck through guitars to the newer ones.
Here are some of the Carvins I have owned

The 2 Carvins I kept will play circles around your MOP sharkies and bound necks!! NO Jackson will EVER out play a good 24.75 scale 88-92 Carvin!!
(Do keep in mind this is from a Grover Jackson freak who is allmost exclusively playing his Washburn USA bolt on MG guitars).
The all maple early ones are just limited in tones.

Ascension man..I see a real Southern Plantation estate there, complete with a Foyer, Credenza, early Jeffersrn era Clawfoot tables, Oriental rug and sizeable easte grounds. Badazz!

Re: Carvin Guitars

On the house it is just an upscale 1950's ranch but the furnature is indeed "real".
I kept two Carvins that were not pictured both "pointies".
Pinky my 1990 X220C. This thing is an absolute BEAST. It's poplar with a maple neck and is so light it feels like a toy but has sustain, resonance and tone for DAYS!!!

The other keeper was my 1988 V220R with abalone blocks straight pointy headstock and even Abalone side dots in Sapphire Flame. Solid maple but lighter and better sounding than you would think!

Both are stellar examples of the best of these early Carvin pointies.

Re: Carvin Guitars

The one thing that's kept me away from Carvin is their lack of a Floyd Rose option for lefty's. Never really understood that. Don't know if it's an option by calling or not, but it's def. not an online option.

Re: Carvin Guitars

I have one im gonna sell soon, only reason is because I bought a new carvin neck and put it on another guitar..

Its a Ebony fretboard strat kit, baby blue body homepainted by last guy who owned before me.. but uh if anyways sounds semi interested, I am looking for only $350 US shipped! Its a great guitar, many of my friends think I shouldnt sell it, but I can only keep one carvin, and my new Maple fretboard one stays.

PM me

But on the topic of Carvins. I own a Carvin bass, two carvin guitars (well soon one) and a Carvin T100 poweramp in my main rig.. I love Carvin, best bang for your buck USA company IMO.

Re: Carvin Guitars

Carvins are great, great guitars. You owe it to yourself to try one out before buying one though. I can't recommend them enough!

Re: Carvin Guitars

I think Carvin used to have a great quality to price ratio going for them. Their quality is still very good, but the prices have risen enough that they aren't really competing with Jackson anymore.

I had a Carvin and sold it. This is my opinion, but they just don't hold up to Jacksons. Carvins just don't sound right (and that was with quite a few pup swaps).

A Carvin with some basic options similar to a Soloist gets up to about $1600, I buy Soloists for $1600 and flame top Soloists for $1800. I'll spend a little extra for a nicer sounding guitar. Also, the fit and finish on my Jacksons has been just a bit better than the Carvins I have run into.

I really can't say anything bad about Carvin, I just prefer other guitars to them.

That is the graphite rods in the necks on the 93 and up guitars. It just sucks the very tonal life out of the necks and makes the guitars sound dead IMO .
I had heard that they stopped using the rods but still haven't been able to confirm that so far.
My 88-92 maple neck 24.75 scale shreadder neck Carvins suprisingly were actually MORE stable than the later ones I have owned with the graphite rods! My old 89 DC200 hadn't seen a neck adjustment in over 10 YEARS when I sold it!
