Last week I purchased a new Carvin Legacy. Last night was the first rehearsal with the amp, and the first time I’ve gotten to really push some volume with it. Over all, it is voiced in the Marshall family. The voicing is dark, and kind of reminds me of my old Rivera M100 or a Marshall Jubilee.
The amp is medium high gain. There is more than enough gain on tap, but I find after 7.5, the tone begins to really compress more that I care for. However, at 7.5 the amp exudes plenty of authoritative punch. I found that once I put some volume to the speakers, the bass control on the lead channel needed to be reduced a lot. With the Master around 4, and had the bass around 3- which was still pretty thumping. The clean channel is just that- clean. I was very please when my wah pedal didn’t cause the clean to breakup like it does on all of my other amps. With the mid control up, you can get into a very Voxish vibe; while keeping the mids low yields more of a Fender flavor. Its still Carvins own voice, but it defiantly nods toward it’s influences. There is a huge amount of headroom hear. Even on the half power setting.
This amp takes pedals EXTREMELY well! I was very excited about this. I was afraid that having to go back to pedals was going to be a nightmare. I was pleasantly surprised at how well my collection of pedals worked with the amp. I ran my Chorus and Delay pedals through the loop, and an old TS9 and Boss OC22 in front of the amp. The effects were just right. They neither overpowered the amp, nor got lost in the mix. My OC-2 is always a deal breaker for amps. It’s such a finicky pedal, but I love what it does. The Carvin handled it like a champ, and I was actually able to dial in a more subtle setting on the pedal that just sounded huge! My TS9 sounded great as well. I dialed in the amp to have a good punchy rhythm to, and used the TS9 to goose the gain for solos. Worked very well. I was afraid that I would have to break out the J&H Ultimate Overdrive, but the TS9 is going to stay on the board. All of my effects sounded great.
Overall, I am very please with this amp. It’s a different voice, which I really like. If you’re looking for something that’s not run of the mill, then I’d defiantly recommend giving the Carvin Legacy a look.
