CC and....??????

I've got a Brian Moore C-55, which is a strat style body in mahogany with a maple cap...maple neck w/rosewood fingerboard.

It came stock with a JB & APH II I believe, but the original owner swapped out the APH for a Jazz neck.

First: I'm not really digging the JB...I've got a Custom Custom to swap it out for.

Second: Although the Jazz splits well & at times is very nice, it's a bit bassy on certain settings.

SO: What would you gurus recommend to go with the CC ? It has to sound full as a humbucker, but it also must split well.

I'm leaning towards a Pearly Gates, but thought I'd throw it out there....................

Re: CC and....??????

Hi Terry, I'd go with alnico 2 for the neck pickup: a PG, AIIPro, Seth Lover or Antiquity. A PG would be a great choice. I agree with your post 100% and that's why I use alnico 2 neck humbuckers: less bass and a less woofy neck pickup tone. Lew

Im not sure how either sound split but the CC/PG combo is killer as is the CC/A2Pro combo. Lew really likes the CC/Seth set up. i would say that any of the 3 would be good! Maybe Dr. Barlo will chime in...he will point you towards a CC/PG set but he also has split them before I think...I have not...good luck bro

Re: CC and....??????

I like the PG as much as the Seth. I used the Seth in my semi hollowbody Hamer Monoco because the bridge pickup in my Monoco is a nickel covered CC...so I went with a nickel covered neck pickup...the Seth Lover. Lew

i would say try the pearly gates, if it isn't to your liking take it back

Thanks....I've got a white PGn in an alder Strat & I like it alot....just wasn't sure of how it would match up with the CC in the mahogany Brian Moore.

I'm guessing it'll be great, so looking for a black one now.

Re: CC and....??????

I have an APH/CC combo in my Carvin. They're almost like a matched set. :burnout:

Re: CC and....??????

Benjy...do you have the APH on a splitter?

Is it fairly believeable as a single coil?

The PGn splits really well & I really dig it as a bucker, but I'd like to check out an APH.

Lew, can you compare the difference between the APH & PG ???

Re: CC and....??????

Yep, I had the APH split, but now I've gone parallel on both pickups ( I get too much noise when split through my rig). It sound sreally cool split, whit lots of chime by itself, and when combined with the CC split, theres a lot of spank and cluck. It doesn't sound like a strat, but it's a very useable sound. I have the PG wired to a split too, and I like the APH a bit more like that; it lets more high come up but at the same time, it isn't as abrasive as the PG.

Re: CC and....??????

custom custom and pearly gates in the neck. Both have alcino 2 magnets i think ( correct me if im wrong) . That or try the APH-1. the jazz is always a popular choice

My first thought was a PG. I'm surprised the Jazz sounded bassy.

The Jazz sounds fantastic on certain settings & by itself, but in order to even it out a bit with the JB, it's pretty bassy.

I think I might put the CC in & see how they go together. If it's not a better match, I'll try the PG.

Re: CC and....??????

I pulled the Pearly Gates bridge and tried the Custom Custom in my i21 (Alnico 2 Pro neck) and found that when I ran them with distortion, there was a basic character to the tone of both pickups that I found too similar, basically the warmth of the APH-1n and the thickness of the CC (as opposed to the greater level of brightness with the PGb). With certain settings, I couldn't really tell when I shifted between pickups (a "problem" I wasn't experiencing with the PGb/APH-1n combination).

Instead, I put the CC in my Carvin DC400T which has a Pearly Gates in the neck (maple neck and top, mahogany body wings). The Carvin is brighter than the Brian Moore, but still there is enough of a contrast between the 2 tone of the pickups to make it work as a combination for me, and I just drop the PGn down from the strings than I would the APH-1.

Re: CC and....??????

I had both a Jazz and a 59 neck with a CC and thought they worked well. I really like the 59 split sounds as well.
