CC Clean & Blues

I've heard a lot about the CC's in the distortion catagory. Sounds promising.
But what about cleans and very light bluesy distortion? Can it pull off blues well?

I play about 1/2 blues, 1/2 rock, so I'm hoping it will do both wonderfully :)

Thanks!

Here is what I think:

To tell you the truth semi cranked powertube tones is not CCs most strongest point in LPs. I love it for high overdriven and effect heavy tones. There it is my favorite pickup. But for what you are describing I guess a PG would be much better. And that one does great overdriven rock tones as well. But with effects I'd take CC over PG.

I rarely do this, but I'm going to have to disagree with you Doc. I find the CC extremely versatile. I have it in a fairly heavy double fat strat, so that may be part of my bias.

It has a suprisingly crisp clean tone in my guitar, and under moderate gain I really like it. It's not to harsh, and doesn't push the amp too hard at all. If you click in my sounclips down in my signature, and scroll down to play "All Right Now", that was done with the CC using only very moderate gain. I used it for the rythym and solo's.

The PG bridge may have a slightly warmer voice clean, I've not owned a PG bridge, so I can't comment. I did own a PG(n), paired with the CC at one point, and ultimately swapped it for an APH-1. The PG(n) just had too many upper mids for me in this guitar.

YMMV

Re: CC Clean & Blues

i goit a demo of the CC in my sig also....... idk if theres any mild bluesy stuff in it, but theres clean....

overall, i couldnt take the soft mushy bass of the CC the way it sounded in my rig......which happened to be a muddy guitar........ but i did really like the soft highs and textured mids for clean playing....sounded ultra smooth...... just couldnt take the muddy bass, so its gone

Cool Bro! ;)

It's just that in the bridge of a LP CC sounded kinda compressed relative to PAF clones. Me being nitty picky about the clean LP tones gotta have at least a PG, if not an antiquity/timbuckers/rolphs. That's what I am saying. Otherwise, sure I'd vouch for CC any time of the day.

I agree. I did not care for the CC's clean (or lack of) tones. Very compressed and always "on the verge" of breaking up. Very little headroom. I tried backing it away from the strings, etc....... no luck.

This was in the same guitar through the same amp (and settings) that a JB sounded beautiful and quite capable of excellent clear clean tones. Maybe I got a bad CC. But others have cited similar stories.....

Re: CC Clean & Blues

Kap_X, C5 is a custom with an a5 magnet. CC is a custom with an a2. And finally C3 is a custom with an a3 magnet. (Custom is sh-5 ;) ).

right, but do you think they would be better for blues? Or a whole different pickup?

My personal opinion is that C3 is the best. It is basically a CC with a slight touch of c5's finest points.

Thanks!

I play about 3/4 blues and the rest rock, r&b, jazz, pop, gospel and everything else.

About a year ago my buddy Rondo brought over his new Les Paul '58 Plaintop with alnico 2 Burstbuckers and we compared it to my Les Paul '59 RI with Tom Holmes HBs, my solid body Hamer Studio with Custom 5 and my semi hollowbody Hamer Monoco with a Custom Custom bridge.

We played through my '51 Fender Super/Dual Proffessional (like Billy Gibbons), Rondo's '53 Fender Super ( both modded and tweaked to perfection by my brother Bruce Collins http://www.missionamps.com) and some of my other old Fender amps: blackface Deluxe Reverb, etc.

We both thought the CC in my Hamer Monoco was maybe the best sounding bridge pickup of the lot and at least equal to the Tom Holmes in my Les Paul.

We were playing at relatively low volumes through a 25 or 30 watt amp mostly.

I've got to add this tho: when I tried the Custom Custom in a solid body Hamer I thought it sounded just as good at screaming volumes through my '59 Bassman, but at lower volumes through the same amp, the CC did not sound quite as stunning as the other CC in my semi hollowbody Hamer Monoco.

The semi hollowbody of the Monoco really adds some needed resonance...especially at low volumes.

The CC sounds best, to me, set close to the strings...this makes it brighter and sparklier.
