Celestian Speakers have a Sound

ehdwuld

A Ficus
Is it just me?

but I have watched dozens of videos on Speakers
comparisons and shoot outs

and Celestian Speakers have a thing

its a honky nasal muted thing
they all seem to have it

its across the entire line to varying degrees

its not bad in context
not unmusical

but present and there

has anyone else noticed that?

The Eminence speakers don't have it
the v30 the hot100 and the WGS v30 copy i have have a "scoop" that makes them nasal to my ears

I personally think the Celestion "thing" is how mic-friendly they are. It's something in the treble and/or midrange, and the whole way they're structured. At least with SM-57's, it's so easy to get them at least "in the ballpark" for a final mix just throwing a 57 where the dustcap meets the cone. Creambacks, Greenbacks, V30's, H30's, and the more classic-voiced ones all have it to some degree.

But not all of them have it. At least not as much. I really struggle with the large dusctap ones sometimes, for example.

I don't hear a "honk", though. Would love to hear an example of what you mean.

Eminence also have a "thing" that I don't gel with, personally. Many of them sound "hollow" under the mic. Almost as if there was some phase cancellation or comb filtering thing going on somewhere. Not sure if all of them have it, but the ones that are trying to go for a Celestion vibe like the Governor, the V12, etc. do.

The governor is supposed to sound like the Celestian vintage series

I get what you are saying

And what Bruce said about the A style

It's the G line and Vs
the vintage 30 I have
The Hot 100 - GT12-100 (Legacy)
The GT12-75 than me and Steve keep shipping back and forth

I will see if I can get a video with it

But I noticed it in all the shoot outs I listened to
Wasn't there on Jensen or Weber or Eminence etc
But almost all the Celestian had it

It probably fits perfectly in a mix with a bass and drums

Have you tried the Redback? It's voiced very differently than most Celestions, despite being in the G line; more of a low mid thing than the higher nasal mid thing the others have.

not yet

but I am curious
the Redback is like 150 watt or something right?

and Securb
if I wanted a speaker that sounds like a Jensen, ......
Jensen is less expensive than Celestion

funny how the American sounding speakers are made in Italy

I agree with this. V30s and greenbacks (which are usually what I end up trying) both tend to be very easy to get decent mic'd guitar sounds out of. I always thought it was something about the mids that just works nicely.

i dont really like the italian jensens much, thought i have a few. i much prefer webers versions if im going for a jensen tone

what do you feel is the difference?

how do the Italian ones differ from the vintage?
or the Weber?

lack of refinement? there are frequencies i hear as harsh or undesirable in many of the current jensen offerings

Yeah, the samples of the the newer Jensens I've heard (at least in a Metal context) all have a very jagged vibe to the high-end. Raspy and unrefined. I guess the upside is they do have a "thing" as well. I'm just not into their "thing", haha.

I'll tell you that it is difficult to record what you may be hearing in the room.

Speakers that sound dynamic or thump in real life can sound sterile or flat in a youtube recording..

Many celestions have a similar signature tone if you will. A roundness I'd call it

I get along with a lot of them. (Except the greenbacks, I like the tone, I just don't like how they are too sluggish to tightly chug)
I get along with a lot of the Eminence line too,... especially in drop B, where I think they can shine.

I also believe that we are used to hearing certain speakers and believe that because they are familiar to our ears, that they are better....

It's difficult to prove that other speakers may be better to those who don't really strive to hear the best in other speakers.

this may be true

I grew up listening to Fenders and Peaveys
no one had a Marshall or Celestian Equipped amps

back in the day, everyone just played them the way they came
unless something broke
