Celestion Classic Lead speaker

Anyone played through one of these?

Seems like my kind of speaker, but what I need to know is, how would it sound through solid state since it is recommended by Celestion for botique amps-- which are generally tube amps.

Thanks anyone.

Re: Celestion Classic Lead speaker

is it really worth speding money on changing a speaker in a solid state (wat kinda does it sound ok or very sterile) ?

Re: Celestion Classic Lead speaker

Nothing's wrong with the SS, it's just that I have a 1X12 cab I'd be putting it in-- seems the Classic Lead would react better to tube, though more than likely you could it for SS. That's why I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this in SS.

Re: Celestion Classic Lead speaker

what kinda sound does the ss have cos i think the lead is meant to be good with a marshall type sound also how many watts is it??

Re: Celestion Classic Lead speaker

I like the Classic 80...is that the spaeaker you're talking about? It's a little cleaner, the bass is clearer and the mids are less honky and crunchy than other Celestions...a little more of an American tone mixed into the Celestion tone.

Zakkly...and I think it would probably (though I don't know for sure) work well with a SS amp, because it will be more "neutral" than most Celestions...

Re: Celestion Classic Lead speaker

I can tell you Eric Johnson likes them. He may not be using them today but he did use them alot a few years ago. They have good tone and your decription of them being a little more neutral is accurate. They still get the classic Celestion British tone when driven by a distorted amp, BTW...but it's not to the same extent as a speaker like a Greenback. Lew

Re: Celestion Classic Lead speaker

I think you're right Lew 'bout the Classic 80 reference. On the site they call it the Classic Lead, but on the back of the speaker it has an 80 on it-- and I was wondering what that meant, so that's probably what you've reffered to.

And from the sound clips I heard, it did sound neutral, which I loved beacause the bass was firm, and the mids weren't honky-- I didn't need that. The Speaker sounds good to me, thanks guys.:)

+1 It's my favorite speaker.

What do you like about it :reporter:
Sparkley cleans, articulate low end whether clean or distorted. It lets the character of the amp shine through but isn't as hi fi (or back-breakingly heavy) as EVMs.

If you're looking for a speaker that's going to shape your sound, you'll probably prefer something like Greenbacks or V30s.

Re: Celestion Classic Lead speaker

Thanks for your input!:)

I don't want a speaker that shapes my sound-- like I love how my current rig sounds, but the Classic Lead (80) seems it would give me EXACTLY what I'm looking for in an upgrade.

Thanks again everybody, you guys rock!!!!!!!
