Celestion G12T-75: good for metal?

Bands like Neurosis, Sleep, Black Sabbath. Or will too much bass end up sounding like a fart through these speakers?

Current speakers are: Carvin VL12-16 70 watts, 16 ohm

Thank you.

That's my favorite speaker ever!
In my humble opinion It does metal very, very well.

Nevermore - Dead Heart in a Dead World was recorded using them.

They're cool speakers.

They're kinda bassy, I guess, but they're more scoopy/hollow than bassy, IMO.

They are good speakers and also not expensive! I prefer them paired with a V30 or other mid-hump speaker though. The scoop is cool, but I also like a good mid punch in the mouth type feel and I can't get that with only the 75s. I ultimately moved away from them, because, even paired with a V30, everything had that scoop feel. I like to be able to dial that in or out if I like.

Or maybe I should change the thread title to:

Celestion G12T-75: what is it NOT good for? :flush:

Re: Celestion G12T-75: good for metal?

I think they are good for metal as they sound scooped to me. I used them for years and nothing else through a 4x12 and 2x12. I now prefer the celestion/marshall vintage and celestion greenbacks. The vintage is neutral and transparent and can do any style. The greenbacks are great for blues and rock.

The T in the speaker model stands for treble. Celestion wanted to make it a trebly speaker but I find it too scooped. It's tight, which is a must for metal. Use a closed back cab for best results for metal.

Re: Celestion G12T-75: good for metal?

They aren't great for super clean tones. They are really aggressive to my ears. I recently A/B them to other cabinets I have and they always sound pushed even when the signal in is sort of clean. I think a part of that had to do with the cabinet I have. It's not very deep and is closed back. I think the speakers sounded a bit tight as a result. In a deeper cabinet I think they would have sounded better.

But if you play rock, punk, metal they will do what you need them to.

My buddy runs Gibsons with stock pickups through a Plexi Reissue into a full stack of G12T-75s and an attenuators (to not kill people) and plays NWOBHM, speed and early thrash and sounds killer. After I hear his shows I immediately question my tonal approach.

And I swear AT mine :D

But seriously folks, some guitarist you probably never heard of by the name of David Gilman, or Gilmire or somehting, last I heard was running one Hiwatt Fane Cresendo loaded 4x12 cabinet for the crunchies, alongside one 4x12 G12T-75 for the Celestion Cleans ;

Also a guy named Bogner who makes amps in SoCal that some people think are pretty good, pairs V30's with G12T-75's in his "Flamethrower" cabinet, which I guess you might say is pretty Metal.

What? G12-T75's and Vintage 30's in the same cabinet? Maybe in an X-pattern? That's insane!
