celestion speaker comparisons - any experience with V30, G12M (GB) and G12T-75?

Re: celestion speaker comparisons - any experience with V30, G12M (GB) and G12T-75?

my favorite sound is a end of the run JMP 50 MV Combo with 2 X Vintage 30. I've found the Vintage 30 gives me the big sound that is everything I love about Marshall and none of the stereotypical blaring Ice pick in the ear I hate about Marshall.

GB = maybe more the traditional sound, but much more mid focus, more fizzy
G12T75 = too clear & harsh
G12H Anniversary = I don't know if I had a bad one, I found this speaker stiff and harsh
G12-65 = I like these, it's hard for me to explain... it's like they should not have made G12T75 because the G1265 has all the clarity and freq range one needs for a guitar amp without the plasticy harshness.

from clips i've seen on youtube the v30 seems a tad "darker" than the greenbacks. is that right?

Maybe non-broke in GBs. I use both and broke in GBs are warmer than broke in V30s. The V30 has stronger low end and stronger high end. It's certainly not darker than GBs, but the stronger low end might make it seem that way when heard not in person.

The V30 has a slightly harder edge that gets over ridden in high gain applications but comes straight through at classic rock gain levels.

good to know. that description matches what i hear from the sound clips on the celestion website.

now this 2203x sounds great at low volumes but gets harsh at higher volumes.

would the tubes contribute to this? it has stock tubes.

Probably needs the bias tweeked. Also relocate the purple wire from the impedence selctor from the 4 ohm lug to the 8 ohm lug. Warmer pre amp tubes couldn't hurt.

As I think may have been mentioned already, the G12H-comes in a 100 watt version which actually sounds really good and doesn't have that ugly upper-mid spike, nor is it annoyingly trebly like the G12T. And it can handle lots of wattage before it breaks up. And as much as I like the G12H, my favorite speaker for the tone and power handling that you want is the Emi Swamp Thang. Absolutely great tone...very smooth and warm with no middy spike, and the highs are like crystal...smooth but present, glassy but not spikey. I've never gotten annoyed by its tone nor have I ever wanted to replace it. It always brings a smile to my face.

I used to be a Celestion guy, until I heard some Eminence speakers. Ever since then, Celestions sound harsh to me.
