hey i was looking at amps and there all around 700$ and thats way to much for me, so i was wondering what would happen if i bought a Celestion speaker, and put it in my old gibson amp, Would it sound better, or would i have to change out the actual amp to get a better sound???
and how much would a speaker cost ??

Those old Gibby amps were class A, right? And they were powered by a couple EL84's, right? (correct me if I'm wrong) I'm supposing you have like.. a 15-20 watt model with a 10-12" speaker. Those don't get much high gain, but you can get some nice, thick, soupy overdrive if you use the right tubes and pickups. What are the spec's on your unknown amp? Without knowing, I'm gonna blindly suggest putting a Celestion Greenback speaker into it, to try to get more bite from it. As well, maybe a re-tubing is in order, to get more girth. Don't ask me what kind of tubes to use, I don't know. I knwo the REALLY basic stuff about tube amps.

Re: Celestion Speakers?!

Celestion's are overpriced and mostly made in China now, IIRC...

Eminence V12's for me all the way. A better V30, and handles 2x the watts.

Now, I used to have a Marshal 1960AV Lead with Eminence speakers, I thougt it was loaded with Celestions till I popped 'er open and found it was re-loaded. It have V12's in it, I got another, loaded with the normal 1960AV speakers and I actually noticed a drastic tonal improvement. Plus, I've run all my amps through my AC30 cab (that won't overload it) and actually LOVE the way the greenbacks sound, so I'll suggest those.

Either way, you can't go wrong with eminence or celestion.

Re: Celestion Speakers?!

A good speaker certainly could not hurt your tone...many times this is one of the best things you can do for an amp. I don't know about your specific amp.

Celestions will run you about $100 per speaker, perhaps a few bucks less. A great alternative is Eminence. They make several speakers that have the same spec's as V30's, Greenbacks, ect. They run about $50 bucks new, and I actually like them very much. I am currently running a set of their V12's, which are V30 clones in my Marshall 2x12.

They also have a new line of speakers out whose name's I can't remember right now...and all of these speakers are made in the USA for high quality.

I didn't knwo they made a greenback clone... rock! I guess the tonal improvement was perhaps becuase of differant models. But, I definately preffer my Celestions over my old Eminences.

Shouldn't he also worry about retaining the originality of the Gibby? Perhaps getting a new amp would be his best bet? Hmmm... I'm really interested as to what this gibson is.

I just saw those on Dave's site. If he says they are a good speaker I trust his word. I believe the Celestions made in England are superior products to those made in China. I wouldn't hesitate to pick those up at that price.

Indie P - I've been really happy with my V12's from Eminence. I want to try one of ther Greenback clones as well. It's cool you are happy with your Celestions...they have been the industry standard for a reason, they rock. I am just suspicious of quality issues I've heard rumors about since they switched production to China. I'd prefer to buy American whenever possible, so my next try may be one of the new line of Patriot or Redcoat speakers they make.

well my cab's probably about.. an early 90's model and the Vox is a 2002... I think they're the American or British speakers. I don't know per-say, I'll check sometime.

Re: Celestion Speakers?!

I was reading a Q&A to Mr. Soldano of the amp co. of the same name a few days ago, and he was saying a speaker upgrade makes a more noticeable difference than tubes, so you might want to try at least a speaker upgrade before shelling out for another amp.

Hey Jeff. I Have a pair of GB12s in my 212 and i absolutely love them. They handle 50 watts a peice and sound greenback like but distinctly different. The bottom end is tighter and more focused, and the highs are a little sweeter. Very good clean speaker as well as a great overdriven rock speaker. I definatly suggest trying them out. Dave at avatar is selling them for next to nothing.
Good luck,
Brian

That could also be because the V12's handle 120 each and Greenbacks a mere 25 each...

Re: Celestion Speakers?!

For a class A amp, it doesn't get much better than a Weber Blue Dog. My buddy's favorite amp has always been a vintage Vox AC-15, but the stock speakers were pretty bad. He swears by the Blue Dog, said he liked it a lot more than the Greenbacks.

Re: Celestion Speakers?!

I guess i shudda said more bout my amp, its NOT a tube amp, its a Gibson
g-20 the speaker is about 10 by 10 inchs ( the Speaker is called a Gibson Ultrasonic )it has 1 channel (its clean)

the panel is, volume, Treble, Bass, speed, intensity, and reverb,
so if i bought a celestion speaker and put it in it would be like having a new amp but the same controls?

Re: Celestion Speakers?!

If you're unsure, I'd go with the lower priced Eminence Legend Series. That way you're not out alot of money if it doesn't help the sound of the amp as much as you'd like.

Talk to Dave at Avatar and see what he recommends. Alot of the Eminence's are only $49 each.
