Ceramic MIM Tele pickup mag swap?

Just curious, has anyone ever swap out the ceramic mags for alnico bars on an MIM Tele bridge pickup? Wondering if it's worth it to even try... thoughts?

Re: Ceramic MIM Tele pickup mag swap?

Gonna need a pair of strong AlNiCo formulation bar magnets, probably A8.

Since the current Fender MIM bobbin is all plastic, it is possible to push out the stud poles without risking damage to the coil. Rod magnets of suitable diameter could be inserted into the tubular holes through the bobbin.

Considering that the coil is a pretty hot wind, relatively weak magnets should combine to create a viable, tuneful pickup of similar properties to the Fender Highway 1.

Thank you, btw. I hadn't even thought about getting the rods. Happen to know where I could find them pretty cut to length?

In very generalised constructional terms, yes.

Obviously, the finished article needs to be sufficiently compact to fit within the regular Telecaster pickup cavity. The bar magnets would need to be considerably narrower than those in the Gibson design.

For a modified pickup with two underslung alnico magnets, the possibility remains to replace the stud poles with threaded screws of some sort - very like G&L MFD pickups.

I' also recommend tone-Kraft. Great prices and fantastic customer service.
