I recently moved out into a small apt. and had decided to stop flipping/acquiring new pieces. However, there were two deals that I couldn't pass up.
First up, a '61 Gibson Melody Maker D that popped up on Craigslist. I made an offer and picked her up $200 off the asking price. The D models come with two pickups and command a higher pricing on the market. I got this about $1000-1250 cheaper than the prices you'll see on Reverb or eBay. Could not pass it up. The guitar is extremely light, resonant, and lively. 5 lbs 2 oz. of slab mahogany. I honestly had not really appreciated the melody maker pickups before, but I dig the fatter fender single coil vibe they got going. She's all original and I intend to keep it that way. The neck is definitely on the bigger side for a '60s neck, but not as beefy as my '60 Melody Maker. She plays well. Just needs a minor setup and my preferred strings. She looks great next yo7 her sibling. '60 Melody Maker D (4.7 lbs) rocking an Antiquity HB.
Second dibs, a 2017 Gibson CS 336 Mahogany in Cherry Walnut. One of 50 made in this finish, 200 total for the run. These ran for $3800-$4200 a year ago. The used market is harsh on most 336s, but this one took a brutal beating. I lucked out. Not too many bids. Told you guys I would get one lol. The mahogany top adds a great deal of warmth to the platform. This is sounds pretty fat with the p90s. She's got some good wood figure on the back. The guitar is light, coming in at 6 lbs 2 oz. and resonant with the wraparound. Going to swap the pickups and probably change the caps. I'd prefer to change the pots, but will keep them stock for now.
I have to unload a couple of pedals, pickups, an amp (not the GA 6), and Morgan cab after these purchases to break even. Hopefully, I won't spot another deal \m/
