Changes to #1

So its time for my MIA Lone Star Strat (swamp ash body, maple neck/fretboard) HSS-Fullshred/Tex-Specials, to go for a re-fret, and I want to utilize this opportunity to do the simplifications that are long over due.

I never really use middle single coil, so i want to take that one out.

While i love how Tex Specials in the neck might record, in the mix live, its either a bit weak in the mix or too bassy, and due to a very unfortunate fact that I am not Richie Blackmore, i cant tinker with a tone knob every second while sounding amazing ... So, I have decided to replace it with a quarter pounder, I love how punchy and middy it is while still "violinish" ...

Since my tone knobs were always set the same in current set up and i mostly adjust volume while playing, i will take it down to a universal tone control and a universal volume control.

I love my SH-10, i just wish it will have a tad bit more lower mids, that's all. So I am thinking of a certain "K" value on the knob pots, correct ?

Please share your thoughts ....

I find that a Full Shred with a 250K pot sounds like a fatter Strat bridge pickup. It sounds bigger with 500K pots, but REALLY BRIGHT. I've also yet to come across a true single for Strat that isn't icepick bright with 500K pots, though I haven't tried a QP.

Re: Changes to #1

If you want to fatten the bridge up even more, the 9K PATB-3 is a great pickup. If you can live with the looks they're amazing and don't sound at all how you'd think. Very PAF'ish and versatile. Very.

You're mods sound solid and well thought out.

I've considered PATB vs Fullshred, and chose in the end fullshred, for now i would like to try and tweek fullshred a bit. But PATB might go into my tele project ... Here is another questions if you switch to 3 channel switch to universal tone and volume will just that wiring change have an effect on the fullshred ?

Also, are there other alternatives to fret metal besides regular, stainless steel or titanium in light of wood combo, maple fret board, and pup choice?

How about trying a different magnet in the SH-10? If it already has an A5 in it, a UOA5 will fatten the mids up a bit without losing the top and bottom like an A2 would.

Ok, but will it still shave that key SH-10 quality of single coil like precision and responsiveness ?

Re: Changes to #1

I think that with the double row of hex screws, you will still have plenty of attack, which contributes to that single coil feel. You essentially just get more present mids.

Any sound clips of SH-10 with UOA5, did not find any on youtue .... Also, are there other alternatives to fret metal besides regular, stainless steel or titanium in light of wood combo, maple fret board, and pup choice?
