Changing Magnets in P Rails

Hi all

I've got a couple of p rails in my LPC.

I can't really be bothered pulling the pickups out just yet to investigate, but does anyone know whether it's possible to change the magnets on the p rails? I'm tempted to put some A2's in there as I've always liked the chimier tone you get from the A2's.

What is the magnet configuration?

And finally, anyone tried it?

On a related note - I've currently got the two push pull wiring that lets me run in either HB, single or P90 mode. They don't have enough quack for me (read, the virtualy have none). For those that use seperate on-off-on switches - can you get more quack mixing one pup in single coil mode with one in p90?

Thanks

Re: Changing Magnets in P Rails

Being a set neck, Mahogony guitar, may be contributing to the lack of quack. I have them in an alder body, maple neck, Yamaha superstrat and it has plenty of quack. I just ordered a set of the cream P-Rails for my new LTD EC-256,but I'm just using the 2-way switch to switch from P-90 to Humbucker mode. I'll will be interesting to see how they sound in a set-neck guitar. I'll let you know.

Bump - anyone help further with changing the magnets before I go to the trouble of disassembling one.....really can't be bothered doing that at this stage....

Re: Changing Magnets in P Rails

Come on...

The magnet in the rail side is a bar magnet, not a cylinder style magnet, which is in the P-90 side.

Are you sure you know what Quack really sounds like?

Re: Changing Magnets in P Rails

I'd ask sludgenutz - he replaced the A5 in the bridge P-rails with ceramic a while ago with great success.

Re: Changing Magnets in P Rails

The magnets are exactly the same as any P90. Swapping magnets voids the warranty, but that never stopped me before! : party:

Alnico II is a little underpowered for the Rails coil, but if you don't like it, you can always go back to the A5's.

The P-Rails are locked together by the baseplate, the 4-conductor, the cover, basically it's more like a puzzle than a standard humbucker. Disassembling one is a very delicate procedure so be careful. And make sure you put the new magnets in the exact same polarity relationship as the old ones, to maintain phase and hum cancellation.

Re: Changing Magnets in P Rails

More chime with A2?? Hmm. Don't think so. More quack with A2? Hmm... really... no.

Your tone will be even darker: The Low-Bass will shift to Hi-Bass, the Hi-Bass to Low-mids, and the whole treble registre will shift down to "airy" highs. It will sweeten the tone and do the opposite of what you want.
