Changing out Epi g400 pups

Ok so no one in my normal forum knows anything about this, so I hope you guys can help. I'm looking for a good pickup set for an Epiphone vintage g400 (in my sig). I play mostly rock, I use a lot of distortion tones (my ideal tone is Green Day's Dookie album), but I HAVE to be able to clean up well. I was thinking a 59 in the neck and a custom in the bridge? I'm not sure how they'll work together. Or maybe two 59s... I dont really know. Any comments would be welcome :)

Welcome!!!

59s are very "vintage" pickups - they will sound very good, clean or driven, and they are very popular. They'll sound good for punky stuff, but a custom may be better for what you're looking at (with its higher output). I'm not too sure how well a custom and a 59 would go together, but I don't see there being any problems- LOADS of people on here rave about the '59 as a neck humbucker.

An alternative you might wanna think about is the Phat Cat. This is another kind of pickup called a p90, but modified so it fits in a humbucker slot. Pete Townsend of the Who used an SG with p90s, and Billie Joe used a p90-equiped guitar an awful lot on American Idiot. They are more like single coils in their sound, so if you want the real thickness of a humbucker, then they probably aren't for you, but they may be worth a thought.

I'll wait for people who know more about the custom to chime in with what they think of that!

+1, it's a nice looking axe. My 335 is a blonde natural wood colour - I like electric guitars that keep some of the grain in their look!

thanks, the picture really doesn't do it justice. I was gunna get the Gibson but they dont make one with that finish.

I'm not a fan of the Amreican Idiot tone to much, its a little to thin for me. I like that thick punchy distortion they had way back when.
