Changing Tubes in my mesa dual

Well I definitely need new power section since one tube already blew. I have to stick with mesa on the power section, but want to change the rest. I'm sick of how fat the bottom end is with absolutely no bite. I want this puppy to have a more viscous raw rock sound to it. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Changing Tubes in my mesa dual

Why do you have to stick with a Mesa power section? I ran JJs in my 2:90 and there was a major improvement in tone.

Re: Changing Tubes in my mesa dual

It doesn't have to be in the tubes. Mesa rectifiers aren't exactly known for their tight bottom or subtle lows and the 3 channel duals and triples have an even sloppier bass end than the 2 channel amps.
Also, the cab plays an important role in the sound. I found the oversized rectifier 4x12" cabs to be WAY too bass-heavy to actually go with a rectifier head, especially the current production.

That said, the power tubes have a bigger impact on your tone than the pre-amp tubes. I suggest you contact Bob from Eurotubes after you read this page of his:

Bob has helped a lot of my Mesa cranking friends to get their Mesas to sound as great they possibly can, without any need to modify the amp itself.

Void warranty.. eh to hell with that. Not like they would really know...

are you running 6L6 or EL34? try running EL34's in there if you haven't already, it's a whole different flavor that sounds just like what you're after.

I don't think changing the tubes voids the warranty (only if failed non-Mesa tubes caused a fault - that repair would not be covered under warranty)

JJ 6L6s do sound pretty nice in a Recto, and the JJ rectifiers make a sizeable impact if you use tube rectification

The representative said you have to stick with mesa in the power section if you want to keep the warranty but the rest you can do what you want with.

If that is true, what an effing con.

Re: Changing Tubes in my mesa dual

i use JJs in my Dual Rect Blue Angel, and couldn't be happier. Eurotubes will sell you pwr tubes within the Mesa bias spec, so there are no worries- a definate improvement.
