Charvel Necks: Are they awesome?

I am saying this because the Charvels coming out the last few years are freaking awesome works of art. I find myself partial to the tangerine San Dimas and a few of the So Cals. I am used to playing vintage radius necks and have been pondering what are the advantages of the compound radius necks the Charvels have on them. Thanks again folks.

Re: Charvel Necks: Are they awesome?

Personally, I've been loving my SoCal. The neck feels so comfortable and natural.

I love those necks. If they made a US production model without a Floyd, I'd be on it like stink on poop.

Re: Charvel Necks: Are they awesome?

Perfer jackson necks.Charvels are too thin for me, but for scale runners they are the best.

Re: Charvel Necks: Are they awesome?

One thing I noticed is how they roll the edges differently than Fender.
It looks like they scallop the edges in between the fret ends, whereas Fenders are rolled evenly across the edge. The Charvel has a more hand finished feel.

The reason for compound radius is that open chords feel better with a rounder radius, while soloing up on the neck feels better with a flatter fretboard. That's one of the best design improvements in the past couple decades.

Personally, I love the new Charvel necks, but wish they were a bit fatter like the vintage San Dimas necks.

I'm not sure I need one, but if I were to buy a Floyd equipped guitar, I'd probably go for the black/maple tele style. Humbucking teles generally sound a little beefier than humbucking superstrats IMO.

Thanks folks. I have been looking at them and really been gassin over them. Guess I need to save a few more coins and find one. I like the tele models also.

Jackson and Charvel necks are about the same thickness (if anything, the Charvel necks are a touch thicker), just slightly different profiles on the backs.

Yes, they are awesome, the radius is really nice with a Floyd setup as saddle height isn't "adjustable" like most bridges. You can get different saddle heights (or shim them) for a Floyd and setup them up as needed for a specific guitar though.

Thanks. Never had a Charvel..only Jacksons..going by what I've read about Charvies.

Ditto! I like thin necks, but have carpal tunnel.. its thick enough to be comfy but not intrusive. It almost instantly felt like home .

I got mine new for under 7 bones from a dealer on ebay. I posted info in my prev thread . (cant find now) If they have the one you want, make an offer.

I like it better than my model 4

In answer to the original question . . . yes. And I'm not even a 25.5 inch scale guy . . .

Re: Charvel Necks: Are they awesome?

The promod necks are just about right to me. I can get along with most thin or thick necks, but I have no complaints about the promods.

For the record, the neck on my '82 prepro is noticeably thinner than my promod necks.

Also the neck on my TMZ natural Charvel is thinner, and is based on the old prepro necks.

I love the neck on my San Dimas. (I have the Style 2, Tele looking one) Very comfortable and easy to play.

Re: Charvel Necks: Are they awesome?

i have a USA So-Cal... picked it up used for $660 which is not a bad deal here in Canada for one that is dead mint... i love it for all it's specs but in general my tastes have changed and i prefer a more narrow nut width (1 5/8's) and a more rounded back shape like my Wolfgang... that being said the So-Cal neck reminds me of the thin neck shape on my mid 90's Jackson Imported Reverse Dinky... thin, flat radius... Stelth like... i still love that shape but some players find them too thin...
