Charvel Pro mod- loose strap buttons?

Is the wood on the Charvels soft??

I put Dunlop straplocks on my guitars first thing. usually I have No problems with them ever coming loose and if there is ever an issue, of if the screws arent snug, I use a toothpick and wood glue.
On both of my Charvels, Ive had the strap buttons coming loose. And I havent even played them that much with a strap. Is the wood soft on the bodies?? Im just stunned that Ive had that much trouble already with them and wanted to know if this was common? Thanks

Re: Charvel Pro mod- loose strap buttons?

I haven´t noticed it being any more common than with other guitars, but anything is possible, I guess...

Re: Charvel Pro mod- loose strap buttons?

When you added the strap-locks, did you use the original screws that came out of the guitar, or the new screws that came with the locks? The new screws may not be as long/large as the originals?

Make sure you periodically lub the assembly so nothing gets hung up and it spins freely. I use WD-40 with my Schallers and haven't had any problems. You don't need to use a lot, just a quick burst, put it togther, spin it a couple times and call it good.

I use the screws that come with the locks so they fit in the buttons. If they are any smaller than the stock screws, I put a piece of toothpick and woodglue in the hole to make sure things are snug..

Good info! The thing thing that has me miffed here is that Ive barely even had the guitars on a strap, so there hasnt been much pull and certainly no bearing friction on the buttons..

Weird . . . I prefer schaller strap locks, but have been using them for a couple years now on my Pro Mod with no issue. I don't think that the wood is the problem. If the toothpick trick isn't working, you could always try gluing in a dowel and redrilling a smaller hole.

Re: Charvel Pro mod- loose strap buttons?

^^ Or simply cram the hole full with toothpicks and let the screw cut it´s own hole before the glue sets, just need a bit of wax for lubrication on the way in ;)

Re: Charvel Pro mod- loose strap buttons?

yeahhh all of my guitars probably have like 5 toothpicks per strap hole... haha

Thanks!! will do this if I need to

Re: Charvel Pro mod- loose strap buttons?

Perhaps you gored up the holes with the larger diameter screws that come with the strap locks. That can happen if the screw is not being pressed on very hard as you screw it in. It basically spins without riding the new threads it is cutting. But it can still be going in while this is happening...just not as quickly as it should be. Therefore it can seem like everything is fine, but the screw is really goring up the threads.

Just don´t overdo the wax, otherwise you can funk up the glue. Just drag the first 2 or 3 threads lightly across a candle. That said, it usually works without wax, but if you overtorque it you´ll have a much bigger problem, so a bit of wax is safer if you´re not 100% sure of how hard you can turn before the head pops off. ;)

Re: Charvel Pro mod- loose strap buttons?

I always have the opposite problem, and that the holes have to be widened (heh heh) when I use the Dunlop straploks.
