Would they fit on a fender strat body without need of any work on the neck pocket? i'm wondering this becasue i'm thinking about getting me one off fleebay to install on my strat since i love how these neck feel so much.. id probably sell the strat neck or get a warmoth body to use it in or something.

Re: Charvel San Dimas Neck question

No. Jackson/Charvel necks have a 2 1/4" neck heel, whereas standard Fender specs are 2 3/16.

ya that is what i heard too.... that is in part why EVH's Frankie's neck pocket is so wide... had many different necks on it including wide Charvels

Re: Charvel San Dimas Neck question

As stated Charvels are 2 1/4" heel width. If you like that C shape order a Musikraft neck and oil-finish it. Their "thin C" contour is perfect for my hands and matches Charvels' pretty well. Their 1pc maple necks also are built to-spec of Charvels in regard to the little truss rod cylindrical groove at the heel if it's a 22 fret neck. Warmoth and USACG don't do that.

yeah, you need a 2 1/4" wide pocket. that's what i used on my 2 tone burst relic that uses a neck and neckplate from one of the new production models. musikraft does 2 1/4" heel bodies.

i like Charvels heel spacing when i use Vintage trems... that little bit wider heel does help the E strings stay on the neck better

Re: Charvel San Dimas Neck question

OK...misinformaton central here....here's the true scoop:

The original Charvel prepro's were 2 1/8" heels, then moved to the more traditional and Strathead heel width of 2 3/16" from the latter pre-pro era through serialization with both 21 and 22 fret necks.

The San Dimas Charvel and Jackson pointy Strat's were 2 1/4" heel, mainly due to the increased use of the Floyd Rose and Kahler bridges so the strings didn't "fall off" the fretboard.

You CAN use a Strathead neck on a body routed for 2 1/4", but you have to "build-up" 1/32" on either side of the pocket to avoid slippage or twisting for a solid contact point.

wow, old thread revival.

he's talking about the new pro-mod charvel necks that are plentiful on ebay from parted out guitars. hence my answer...no misinformation at all.

Re: Charvel San Dimas Neck question

No, it was basically implied that all Charvel necks were 2 1/4", which is not true...there was a definite progression in size...the original Strathead necks were "rumored" to be directly copied from a vintage Fender neck including the headstock contours and cutouts.

Re: Charvel San Dimas Neck question

My pre-pro Charvel has 2 1/8. But most available "Charvel" part necks or reproductions have the later measure.

Re: Charvel San Dimas Neck question

Very true and 100% correct...when they started in about 79ish, they used a vintage Fender neck as a template, and they used the 2 1/8" neck heel as a "standard".

I think they found that with that size, there wasn't a lot of room for error with the strings falling off the necks, and with the advent of the Floyd Rose and Kahler trems, it became necessary to increase the heel accordingly for that purpose.

Charvel was weird though, there are a lot of simmilarities, but more differences between them. Never say Never in Charvelland. Anything was possible.

When the transition was, I can't say exactly. The Heineken Strathead from the 81 Winter NAMM was a 2 3/16" heel width.

Re: Charvel San Dimas Neck question

Mine is from Feb 81. I just measured it when I saw this thread. I didn't take it apart though, just measuring the widest point at about the 21st fret.
