Buy a Jackson JS32 series bro. I've got a Kelly and the stock plastic nut comes SO CROOKED you'll learn how to file one properly.
Once that's fixed, it's all fun with these guitars man. A screamer for next to nothing!

The stock Jackson pickups kick proper ass and the fretwork is impeccable for a cheapo.

Schecter and Michael Kelly, which I am convinced are made by the same ghost-builder, are amazingly-built, from their higher to their very lowest end.

Yamaha I have mixed feelings as I've played some VERY decent low-enders as well as some VERY dead-sounding high-ends. Still, everyone has their share of dogs so I wouldn't hold it against them.

Swing is a Korean company that makes guitars with a lot of substance for not that much money, I love mine but they are significantly harder to find.

Jackson and LTD I didn't really like their lowest-end ones, felt like they were built too cheaply but their medium-end stuff and up are really good.

Washburn is a seriously underrated company as well although I find that their Korean-built axes are significantly better on average than their Indonesian-built ones. Their US-stuff are simply top-notch.

All of the above are assuming you'll go new or at least NOS, if you choose to go to the used market then 300 USD have the capacity to get you significantly further if you know where to look.

Squier '51. It is really hard to beat it around the price IMO.

Other than that, lots of good options have already been suggeated above. The Sterling Sub is such a good idea that probably it will be my next modded onstage workhorse.

The Sterling SUB Silo3 is, in my opinion, the best $200 guitar out there. Really a good quality instrument with good electronics and well put together.

This would be my choice. It is a great platform for heavy and cleaner styles, or even a do-it-all versatile guitar. It is also super easy to work on.

Doesn't seem to have been mentioned, but there are a heap of PRS SE models on Reverb for under $300 - they're great value for money.

This will seem odd and way off base, but Peavey T-60's can be had for nothing these days. There is a natural finish version in a local pawn shop, that I may be grabbing this weekend for $150.

Peavey never really topped the T-60's in my eyes. Ugly as all hell, but they play and sound great. You could pit them against almost anything, and it would hold its own.

You just have to like that ugly ass body.

Don't let the ebay prices scare you. There is reason so many are still in there at those prices. You find them anywhere for $100-300, depending on condition.
