Re: cheap punkrock amp?

oh and i'm looking at about a $350 USD limit

Re: cheap punkrock amp?

A Peavey Classic 50 would be perfect for you. You can get the head, 410, or 212 for $350 on Ebay.

what about the classic 30? or are they completely different amps...

Re: cheap punkrock amp?

No offense, but why are you guys recommending the Peavey Classic amps? They're good amps, I played a Classic 30 myself, but it's a clean amp. Maybe with pedals you could get something hard or brutal, but it sounds like he wants an amp that really nails heavy distortion right out of the box.

The Blue Voodoo has two channels. One is a clean (not that it's needed) and a pretty kicking distortion channel. It can go from anywhere from modern rock to fully blown out high gain. The tone would be great for punk. Palm mutes are a blast through it and it's pretty articulate even though it has way more gain on tap than is needed. It's dirt cheap and has good tone. Can't ask for much more than that.

You can't go wrong with a Crate. I'm even starting to consider a blue voodoo myself. I haven't played one long enough, but for the amount of time I did play it I did like it.

I love the distortion channel on my Classic 50. Sure, it's not a XXX or 5150, but it has plenty of gain for punk. I guess it depends on the definition of punk though. I tend to think more along the lines of classic punk...Clash, Pistols, Ramones, etc. The Classic 50 is not a high gain amp, but it does have more gain than most people think. I don't need any pedals to get a good distortion sound out of it.

Re: cheap punkrock amp?

I'm sorry Ryan. I was completely oblivious to a distortion channel...lol. I didn't see anything on the Classic 30, so I never thought that the Classic 50 would be much different. Forget what I said before about the Peavey. Of course it's been a while since I played the Peavey, so it could have just had a broken distortion channel that I forgot about.

That provides two very good options. For classic punk go Peavey, for the harder/more modern punk go Crate.

From what I've played with it, the XXX was more of a clean amp too, am I losing it? I know the 5150 has its share of gain.

But he wants at least SOME tone. actually if your looking for great distortion right out of the box, i've tried the flextone II head and liked it (for that style). you can find them around $400 ish on ebay without the cab, so you'd be paying more than what you wanted too.

other than that i trust the other guys opinions on the blue voodoo, personally i dont have much experience with crate and i really am not turned on to doing so, but these guys know their stuff

Re: cheap punkrock amp?

There's a reason many forms of punk use a clean amp.

I get a better punk sound from overdriving my speakers than overdriving my amp.

Just a thought.

Re: cheap punkrock amp?

Crate Blue Voodoo...Maybe...if it works. I lost 360 on mine getting it off eBay, ain't a penny commin back to me. Bought it for 325, shipping 60, and new tubes 75. got the new tubes because it didn't sound right at all, still didn't after new tubes. Had to get a 165 dollar repair done, and it still didn't have nearly enough gain for me. 325+165+75+60 = 625. Could have gotten a 5150 for that price, and been a happy camper. Could only sell it for 265 (shipping included) because it still sounded like crap. That being said, I LOVE my Behringer V-amp2.
