CHEAP single minded High Gain amp ? (Randal content)

I am a little bit (actually A LOT) out of my comfort zone here.

I am NOT a High Gain (think modern metal levels of gain Pantera and beyond - not that Pantera is modern anymore) kinda guy . . .

. . . so for High Gain, i always thought i will be using a pedal into a good tube amp.

BUT, there is a guy selling a Randal RH50T (head) for very little money, w. the foot switch.

So, my question is :

IF you are looking for a CHEAP High Gain amp (tube), how good is this amp ?

Is there anything in the $300 to $400.00 USD (MAX) price range that is 'better' ?

Better = forget about anything remotely clean. We are talking about something that can do Pantera / Rammstein / In This Moment / hell, even some sort of mutant Garage Punk, if need be.

Does anyone know if this amp has an overdriven tone too, or is it just balls to the wall DISTORTION ?
...not much on Youtube about this model, and the clips that i did see was very bad quality.

Any info is greatly appreciated !

I don't know about the Randall, but I've been really surprised how good my Jet City 50 watt head sounds with lots of gain, and they go dirt cheap even when new.

Re: CHEAP single minded High Gain amp ? (Randal content)

I think I had a combo version of that one, it was... okay.

Musician's Friend is blowing out Bugera amps.

Gosh, I'd look into a 100w Peavey Valve King in the $400 range. In fact that & the 6505 come in lower wattage models, if you prefer 50w...

Or a Peavey Windsor, for plexi tone. But you want high gain...A la Pantera/ Rammstein...nix that

Gosh, I know Nuno & Lynch have been at NAMM going to bat for Randall lately, but I honestly don't know what they would sound like now...

Laneys might also be found used & affordable.

Not much help, I'm sorry...

Thanx guys . . .

. . . keep 'em coming !

I'll put it this way. If I had $600 to spare I'd pick up both the 6262 and 333 amps from MF. I wouldn't buy the Randall again.

(I'm a high gain guy.)

The 6262 is a copy of the 6505+. It should do just about everything paired with the right speakers. You'd also get a warranty, so you could use the amp for 11 months and then sell it for close to what you paid for it with little worries.

I never played the tube version, but I had a RG 200h in the early 00's. I liked it alot, the two footswitchable gains on the OD channel make it fairly versatile, and it's a Randall so I'm pretty sure it will be fine for Pantera.

peavey 6505 combo
Any Krank amp
Traynor YCS100

You really didn't miss anything.

I ended up ordering a Bugera 333 and a Bugera 6262 from MF last night. $249 each, brand new. Couldn't pass them up. Grabbed the extended warranties for $30 each, so MF will take care of any issues for the next two years, and I'll probably sell them for close to what I paid after 20-22 months. :D

I have that amp as well and played through it for the 1st month I owned it..the sound was "ok " I compared it to my RG100es one night..my conclusions.. I loved the clean of the RH 200 and the fact it had 3 channels, 2 independent EQ's and some options to tweak your tone BUT the distortion on my RG100 was superior to the RH200 in overall quality of the distortion.. Not as crunchy at low volumes (serious hard rock sound at low volumes) but was alot more natural, aggressive and smooth....whereas the RH100 was more harsh and brittle..but still sounds decent for an SS amp distortion... Perhaps it was the settings I had it on or the comparison wasnt a tad fair.. lol .. dunno

Try to find a single channel Ampeg VL locally. They are probably pretty low in value, but they're killer amps. The best of the line are the 501 and the 1001.

Mine was the G2 series, if that makes a difference. For high gain, and to balance volumes, I used the "Vintage" gain 1 cranked, and for crunch I used the "modern" gain 2 all the way down.
I wish I still had that amp, it was way better for low volume practice than any or my low wattage tube amps.

They are cool amps... Maybe in Socal they grow on trees but everywhere else they are freaking rare as hens teeth.

There is a used VL503 here that ive been eyeballing but the guy wants 1000 euro for it so i'm gonna let him sit on it for awhile and see if he comes down in price.

yea.. mine is a g2 as well.. Bought it around a year ago for 300 just to have another head.. Not a bad amp that gets some good sounds and is definitely awesome for bed room practice.. the gain/master is not near as sensitive as the RG 100.. seriously.. you turn the RG100es master above 2 and you are no longer playing a bedroom volumes

Randall does make some of the best SS amps on the market
