Cheap strings

Well, a friend of mine is trying every set of strings under $5, which is a worthy endeavor. Another friend buys Elixir's for his acoustics, and of course they are quite a bit more expensive, so friend 1 throws us both a set of $2 Musicians Gear strings. I usually go with D'Addario 80/20's or the EXP's. I pop the MG set on my Taylor 310ce... here's a couple things I noticed: the low E is a bit odd. When on tune, it plays sharp fretted anywhere at first. After some stretch and some play, it settled into being right. The color of the bronze is very yellow, whereas I am used to the more coppery orange of the D'Addarios I usually play with. Tone is fine, not really anything out of the ordinary. I'm really wondering if it's worth switching, because of the price. I did once try the electric strings, and immediately yanked them off. They just sounded wrong. For 12's, they don't feel that especially stiff, but that seems to be a function of the guitar as much as anything.

My Art and Lutherie guit seems to feel stiffer with just about any string at all. It's currently strung with a set of EXP's, and it sounds great. It's really a different guitar from the Taylor, of course. It's a cedar topped cutaway, CW model. I'll have to try the MG set on it, and see what comes of it.

Sounds like you may be comparing 80/20 bronze (brass) with phosphor bronze.

I have very little experience with cheap, off brand strings, but the ones I have seen didn't look to be made to last (crappy wrappings on the ball end) and sounded very dull out of the box.

You may be right about the phosphor, that sounds familiar.

Re: Cheap strings

Martin phosphor bronze 9's on my acoustic (red package) and Fender XL150's pure nickel on my electrics. Both $4 sets. I think fresh strings are best but only after stretching.

Re: Cheap strings

I rot strings so I used to buy only what was on sale. Darco, SIT, Slinkies....as long as it was under 5 bucks. Been a while since I changed strings as I like darkness, and apparently I'm not rotting through nickels.

Re: Cheap strings

Oh, got some First Act strings on backup though.

You may like those.:D I had a customer bring an electric guitar in for me to restring and they had me put a set of First Act strings on it. Terrible, terrible strings. Dead and dull sounding right out of the box (or just "dark"?). They seemed to be made from some weird crappy alloy, as they had a darker, but not corroded, look to them.

Re: Cheap strings

For my acoustics it's nothing but Elixirs.

For my electrics: webstrings. Best prices and great strings.

My Hamer will be getting Elixir Baritones when it's done and my Godin will get some 9s when it gets new, non-First Act strings. I think I'll have to install a different tone cap in it. I'll be putting some of those ground-flat on my bass.

I've got a set of First Act acoustic strings I'll be putting on my Hamer off the bat though. heheeh THAT'S HOW I TREAT YOU, GET USED TO IT YOU MARRIED ME

Re: Cheap strings

I've been through all the different strings that are/were out there. I settled into using the D'Addarrio XL115 (11 through 49) on all my electrics & the D'Addarrio J17(13 through 56) on all my electrics. I actually did break a string at practice last night but I got lazy & haven't changed my strings on that guitar as I should have. I'll do it tonight.
