Cheap Vintage Combo Amp Recommendations

I'm looking for a good, vintage (Or vintage voiced) combo amp that deals a nice thick, crunchy sound without spending too much. Something along the lines of Cream, Early Zeppelin (studio), Deep Purple, etc (I guess I'm looking for a Plexi, huh?) Something not too loud either.

Re: Cheap Vintage Combo Amp Recommendations

Marshall Class 5 from a few years back fits the bill. Also, the Gibson Goldtone GA-15RV from the late 90's.....the Joe Perry amp.

I have an old Carvin V212 combo I found for less than $300. It has a power scale switch 25/50/100. However, even at 25 watts, it's on the loud side.

How cheap is cheap? I don't think you want to go that cheap because of reliability concerns and also nothing very cheap sounds too good. I'd wait and get something along the lines of a Peavy Delta Blues or maybe a Kustom-probably both are a little less expensive than a Fender.

I checked out the Delta Blues, not really my thing. I really liked the Marshall Class 5 when I listened to a demo. I'm running on 2G data so it's taking a bit. If we're talking used, around $500 would be ideal. I've seen and heard about some phenomenal vintage amps going for cheap so I'm not too concerned about the low price I've set. I'll lean back on the Marshall, since it's got pretty much the tone I'm looking for, but the lack of gain knob isn't the best for bedroom playing. Worst case scenario, I snag some headphones somewhere lol

Well , if you are checking vintage, I've seen some sweet deals on some of the old Ampegs, and they sound pretty Marshally cranked up ( I have a old restored 60's Ampeg Mercury that is absolutely dogs nads), but please bear in mind, unless they have been restored, it's gonna be a couple hundred extra on average to have them restored , and thats if you can find or know of a very good Amp technichian..you can't just take it any old place in case you already don't know.

JOYO Bantamp Blue Jay $150
And a Laney Cub 2x12 cab $199

Good luck

Here's a different option and approach: Marshall JMD1 combo. These are getting around $500 or less now and they can pretty well nail any of those tones listed by the OP at any volume level. It also has a head phones out, Fx loop, and emulated recording or PA out. There is the normal learning curve with a modeling amp-it's a digital preamp and a tube power amp- but once you figure it out they are easy to use.

Not vintage, but try a Fender Bassbreaker 15. A used one can be had for $450-500.

Peavy valveking used 200-300 I've seen around....not vintage enough?

Re: Cheap Vintage Combo Amp Recommendations

I think this is one of the most difficult questions that has been posed on here for a long time.

Aside from the budget limitations, there are few British-voiced combos and they will be LOUD. You can find Fenders, Peaveys...even Mesas at this price...but a British amp? You're going to have to dig deep.

A JCM 800 will probably be out of your price range, but you might find a 900. I've seen TSL122s for $650...but....LOUD. Some of the.Orange stuff could work...I thought about a Tiny Terror, but that's a head only. You might find something like a Blackstar combo, or even a VOX AC-15. Your bet bet might be a DSL 401, which I like better than the 40C.

The vintage Mesa stuff was Fender-based, but the newer amps got their own thing. A Nomad, F-Series or Dual Caliber would be a great amp to have, but you'd have to judge suitability. Their British-voiced amps like the Stiletto Ace are going to be out of your range. But a 212 Maverick paired with a Horizontal Recto 212 has some Fender, Vox AND Marshall tones in it. I love this rig and I've used it in small clubs and let it rip at some outdoor festivals too. I've seen these amps in the $450 to $650 range.

The only other amp I can think of is LANEY. But finding one would be hard.

Not much out there that will meet your specs at this price point. You might want to consider an American-voiced amp and a British-voiced pedal like the Carl Martin Plexi-tone, etc.

Good luck.

Bill
