cheapest way to finish a guitar

Re: cheapest way to finish a guitar

I am in no way trying to be a d*ck but your posts are hard to read without any punctuation.

Good luck. I was in a similar situation as a teen except back then, most cheaper guitars were pure garbage.

when I was young they were cheap as well.. but damn some of these cheap guitars now aday are pretty damn good

Daaaaaaang, let andrew96 follow his dreams. We all start somewhere. Even if some users see his question as a "stupid question" (which should be an oxymoron), he's trying to learn and isn't afraid of people pushing him down for it. A little bit of humanity goes a long way.

I've used Minwax Polyshades with success. It is a stain/polyurethane mixture that is easy to use, and can be had in either a satin or gloss finish. I went with the satin, because I'm lazy (satin is less work) and like satin-finishes in general, so it was an easy choice to make. You don't have to wipe the stain off with Polyshades, and a couple thin coats is MUCH better than one or two thick coats. I also highly recommend masking off the guitar very well and finish only one section at a time. You really don't want it to drip down the body and leave runs.

I don't see what anyone's job situation has to do with finishing a guitar. Andrew if you want to be a Luther you have to drive the first screw at some point, it seems like you are at those beginning stages. Just keep working at it and you will get progressively better. If you don't have cash for clear even a solid top with no clear can be buffed out to a high gloss finish. A clear coat will give it more depth and sparkle. Personally I have been on a polyurethane kick lately, I like the way it catches the light. You can pick up a spray can of poly for around 10 bucks at Home Depot. If you dont have the 10 bucks PM me your email address and I will PayPay Gift it to you.

That's extremely nice of you Bruce. Seriously, the forum could use more people like you.

Re: cheapest way to finish a guitar

thank you securb i apreciate the offer but i don't like accepting stuff from people even if its my birthday and from my mom. But I've used miniwax before and it works well for me and its going to be an opaque finish. i just wanted to know if there was either a cheaper or better way other than nitro. i want a gloss finish so i think a 1/5 pint of poly is the best choice. and yes i'm 19 graduated in 2014. my step dad, mom every one at my school and bassically everyone i know doesn't think i can work. so my step dad told me to apply for ssi. but i don't want a hand out, i want to work for my money. just clearing up one of the reasons why i don't work. i've applied at like every place in my town and some places out of town never got a job.

Re: cheapest way to finish a guitar

I hear the thoughts of those who would go to bat for their kids or relatives with autism.
My nephews are worth more than gold to me, and they've got a set of parents, another uncle, a grandfather and a whole bunch of cousins who feel the same.

Andrew, I've slightly edited your posts to make them easier to read. I did my best to keep your original words intact.
I hope this will help you get your point across better.

Andrew this is not a handout it is an investment in the future. The world could use more kids like you. Motivated, bright and focused on their goals. Let me do this for you and hopefully one day you can pay it forward to someone else. The SDUGF in a community that you are now part of, we take care of our own.
