I'm with Zerb on the millivolt scale. That would be great to have.

Ehm, you DO realize that that was a joke, right?? :beerchug:

Soulman: After you select one pickup clicking in compare tone, you can add another pickup by clicking on "Pick Another..." or "Add Tone", then clicking on "Add Tone to Comparison" next to the pup you want to see.

Sorry...I might be dumb.

I don't see any "Pick Another..." or "Add tone..." links.

After I read it again I did. :6: It would be nice to see though.

Evan

I love it. It's much better laid out and more functional. I especially like the addition of the sound samples, and symbols to give a quick idea of what to expect tone-wise. Pairing the name with the stock number is also a plus.

Great job!

Jeff

Re: Check Out The New Tone Chart

Thanks for the comments. Keep 'em coming.

As for numbers vs. graphs: we did a poll on here last year and you were 50 / 50 split down the middle. So we decided to make half of you happy. As for the other half of you, sorry (but we still love you!). ;)

Millivolts isn't going to happen anytime soon. Listing millivolt specs is fraught with problems -- and there'd be no way you could compare our millivolt specs with another manufacturer's unless they were all tested on the same test guitar using the same strings, same strum strength, etc. Sorry.

As for the order of the pickups on the chart, that's my doing. It's not by number and it's not alphabetical. It's based on how I believe people would use the chart, e.g., comparing PAF-type humbuckers.

Who else has comments?

Idea: What might be nice (and save a few questions) would be to have it like SH-1 / TB-1,
SH-4 / TB-4

and so on for the pickups that are available in both spacings ;)

Re: Check Out The New Tone Chart

Gotcha, Evan, on the millivolts. I didn't think of that (obviously). ;)

About the order, how about dividing it up by class and then by part number. Just like on the Products page where you have Vintage, Progressive and Cutting Edge for the humbuckers, divide the humbucker section of the chart in to those 3 classes, then sort by model number within each class. Do the same with the others. It sure would make it easy. It it just looks weird going from SH-1 to SH-3, then 2, then 10, 12, 13, 14, and 11 is way down there. The flow doesn't "flow" IMO.

Re: Check Out The New Tone Chart

It looks good to me. I never realized how similar the Jazz Bridge Model and the Screamin Demon are.

Re: Check Out The New Tone Chart

Thank you very much for getting rid of the PDF! Worst format in history!

This version is much more readable and useful.

Re: Check Out The New Tone Chart

I just did a tone comparison of the AII for Tele and a Vintage 54. The AII Bridge dirty is labeled wrong. It is giving the CLean neck sample. But I like the layout and it works!

Re: Check Out The New Tone Chart

Great improvements! Although I won't be able to read it in meetings at work now that the print is larger...

A couple of tweaks:
1. Lose the Pro/Players choice - tone is tone
2. Maybe instead of cubes/flames, a standard/hot/nuclear rating - I'm not saying millivolts, but something a little more informative than fire/ice
3. I still don't agree with the CC eq ratings!!!! I'll post on that later Still should be more like 4/8/6

Re: Check Out The New Tone Chart

This is great, Evan. I love being able to line up pickups for easier spec comparison (the Tone Comparison page.) I can't imagine how much time I've spent writing down my own column charts for comparing pickups. Thanks for saving my future time!

Really much better overall. Big thumbs up.

Its cool, much better.

No sound clips for the lipsticks and the Phat Cats.

IIRC, Evan said previously that there are no plans for new sound clips at this time. I would also like to see some new sound clips and I'm sure it will happen eventually. We'll just have to be patient.

Re: Check Out The New Tone Chart

Big thumbs up. I'd just say put the Antiquities on there too, in their own category, so it'd be easy to do a quick comparison.

We didn't have access to the guy who produced and recorded the original sound clips back in the mid-'90s. He was an artist who joined a touring band. Then he settled in to a life as the editor of Frets magazine and a frequent contributor to Guitar Player. He was way too busy as a gear review-guy to get the soldering iron back out and fire up the studio to make clips of the new pickups.

Until now....

Announcement forthcoming.
