Re: Check this new ENGL head out, it looks and sounds awesome!!!!

They're great amps. This particular model is a bit pricey though (3300Euro). An Engl Screamer 50 Head goes for 900 Euro's. The question is whether you really need all the LED's, loops and EQ setting or not. The standard Savage 120 head cost around 2000 Euro's and it's already loaded with features. I would presume that the quality/tone basics (pre-amp, tubes) are the same.

On the other hand, if you do have the dough.....:;

Just looking at reminds me of a joke someone made about EVH rig in the latter years ...

"Allright .... how do you make it go to Warp 9?"

It bugs me when some tube amp purists don't recognize some of these more sophisticated amps. Bells and whistles have often equalled below average tone,
but companies making advanced amps like ENGL, Bogner, Diezel, H&K, and Two Rock
have pushed tube amplification the same way Neve, Demeter, and Manley have
pushed the limits of quality in the recording field.

I've heard the Powerball, and thought it looked like a great, versatile gigging amp, but if the Special Edition sounds as good as it appears, it'll remain their flagship.

Nah ENGL are awesome, i just arent thrilled with mine at the moment because i think theres something wrong with it still, ill post some clips soon when i get my mic back off my friend and you'll see what i mean.

But the other thing that stands out about that particular special edition is that it can take EL34's, which none of the other heads boast as a feature although with some work they probably could.

I don't know if the SE would be $1400 better than the Powerball...

Re: Check this new ENGL head out, it looks and sounds awesome!!!!

If I'm right, I think the ENGL SE is a modified version of the Savage 120. When I was looking at versatile amps, I came across it, but at that time the SE was rarer and it wasn't their flagship amp. To me, ENGL is voiced for metal and much harder rock than say my H&K Triamp, but that's why I went with H&K. I liked the classic sounds, and a higher gain channel was fine, but I need more channels that were lighter.

From the clips I've heard of ENGL, they are really great high gain amps. The harmonics and the brutality that it offers is quite amazing. However, I don't think it's for everyone. Young Angus, I know you hated your ENGL, but you like Marshall-esque tones (I remember you posting about how to get those type of sounds) and I'm afraid you may not nail it with that amp. It's like trying to get death metal out of a Tele through a Fender Twin. Maybe the EL34s will help you get that sound, but you have to ask yourself if you want another amp to imitate that sound in your head or do you want to get the real thing that will nail it. You kinda have to weigh out the pros and cons.

I'd love to run the SE in stereo with my Powerball :saeek:
