Chewy, syrupy wah???

I have a Dunlop Crybaby 95Q optical wah. It sounds good and its small
size fits my board well. The auto on and off is the best feature. I wish I could find a thicker,
chewier wah that was optical. I would be willing to deal with a wah that I had to switch on, if it sounded good enough.

With my band, I use wah for bands like Pearl Jam, Sound Garden and Alice in Chains.

I'm not big on Dunlop wahs in general.

My fav wah right now is a Jen made Sound City wah Face and it is a VERY chewy sounding wah...lots of nice vocal midrange and the top end is bright but not harsh or piercing, it's got a very musical tone to it.

It's a vintage piece but they can be had for lots less than a slightly older Clyde or even V846 wahs so I think they are a GREAT deal in a nice wah these days.

One Dunlop wah I do like is the first gen Hendrix wah...those are special IMHO, nice big wide sweep, fat low end and again a treble that is there and very sharp but not harsh.

Ding ding! I have this wah, and play songs from all those bands and it's ideal. Not too expensive, adjustable trim, and looks pretty cool as well. Worth a look.

I had this for a little while but ended up replacing it again with my 95Q because the sweep felt better, plus you have to click on the Cantrell which is a pain in the arse when gigging.

Would prefer but if I found a wah that was head and shoulders above my 95Q, I could put up with a standard switching wah. :biglaugh:

Well...a switchless wah drastically reduces your options as there are only a dozen or on the market that I know of...

I stand by my suggestions I made earlier but none of them are switchless...

These are all non optic, but I've achieved that description of Wah with the Clyde Deluxe Wah from fulltone. You can manage the sound to your taste and all with an old clyde-esque sound. I also loved the Vox Big Bad wah for it's sensitivity, versatility and tone palette... but you said you don't favor Dunlop style wah pedals and this one it's based on them just like the Cantrell which it's indeed a sweet and chewy sounding wah right out of the box.

As far as switchless goes, I curently favor the Morley Dragon Wah and although it can get very bright on the top end, it seems that when I back off the output knob it cleans the harshness an provides a smoother sweeter wah sound. It's my current favorite and switchless/optic offers a big advantage on stage!

Didn't like the Fulltone wahs I had. I also don't like Morley wahs. I am going to buy another used Cantrell and see if it can knock my 95Q off the board. Maybe I will keep both!

Biggest problem for me when I had the Cantrell wah was how narrow the sweep is, I could not get used to it, my feet could not use it properly compared to a standard Crybaby.

What do you think of the Bonamassa wah?

MXR CAE wah. top shelf. flexible and trimmable as hell.
Two inductors each with their own q and gain trimmers. Kick boost too if you want it.

Too many options. I like plug n play wahs, night go back to the Cantrell and get used to the sweep. If I end up thinking it sounds better than the 95Q, it may be a keeper. Wish the sweep was not so narrow.

No, the site says it is narrow. Cantrell likes it very narrow. I am not good at explaining the technical details but I know the wah effect happens in a smaller range on the Cantrell compared to most Crybaby wahs, so your foot works within a narrow range. Was difficult for me to get used to.

So. I think I will grab a Zakk Wylde or Jerry Cantrell wah to compare to my 95Q once again.

The thing is, I like a wah to be really thick and meaty, wide, if you will.

I feel ya...I guess it's all about what you're used to...I use vintage wahs and vintage style wahs mostly and most of those have a very narrow and fast sweep so the JC95 was a bit wider than what I'm used to but I see what you're saying too...

Every try a Colorsound style wah??

VERY wide sweep...original units cost a lot but there are a few good clones out there...

Thanks bro, I will look at those! I might try the Zack wah since it has a very wide sweep.
