I used to have a Squier Mini. I thought it sounded horrible, so I put Vintage Noiseless Strat pickups in it. That made it sound better, but it still didn't sound like a real Strat, and that's probably because it's a hardtail and the body is plywood. Anyway, it wouldn't stay in tune until I put mini Grovers on it and heavy strings -- an 11 for the high E. With a scale that short, there's just no tension with 9's. Once I did all that, it sounded decent and was a good player. It had a nice neck on it and a nice fret job.
I ended up giving it to a friend with a young kid who wanted to start playing.
