Child's Guitar - Suggestions Needed

Re: Child's Guitar - Suggestions Needed

I used to have a Squier Mini. I thought it sounded horrible, so I put Vintage Noiseless Strat pickups in it. That made it sound better, but it still didn't sound like a real Strat, and that's probably because it's a hardtail and the body is plywood. Anyway, it wouldn't stay in tune until I put mini Grovers on it and heavy strings -- an 11 for the high E. With a scale that short, there's just no tension with 9's. Once I did all that, it sounded decent and was a good player. It had a nice neck on it and a nice fret job.

I ended up giving it to a friend with a young kid who wanted to start playing.

My girlfriend's neice has a little First Act acoutstic. I don't know where she got it from; I think it was a birthday gift. It's not a great instrument, but it is equivalent to other toy guitars out there.

I bought my son the V. Keeping it in tune was nearly impossible. I ended up upgrading him to a Epi G-400. Thin body for small arms but neck is just a bit too long yet. The short scales are mostly the same with tuning stability. The Red Special Brian May mini looks the coolest I think. He has the mini V hanging on his wall now :)

Yeah, the ones that look good to me are the squier and the ibanez.

I don't like how the epi looks like because of the small body.

The flying V looks great

Here's the ibanez but I do recall seeing a different one

It all depends on what the kid wants too. He/She is the one who is going to play it so, it's up to him/her. My nephew asked for a red strat so that's what he got.

*edit*

The guitar is gonna need a setup after you get it. My nephew's strat could have had a better fret job. The electronics (5 way switch, pots, pickups) are crap and the strings it came with were crap also. That said, it's well worth the money considering it's all minor stuff. The neck and body had no problems. The finish looked great......he didn't take care of it so the poly finish has tons of scratches and dents now. Hope this helps.
