Hi all

I just posted in the Trading Post that I'm looking for a Chorus pedal. And *possibly* a flanger, but that may be down the road.

I'm not exactly flush with cash, as you may have figured out by reading other threads, so I buy all of my gear used. Even so, I'd like a chorus pedal that plays well with my TS7 and TC Electronic Dark Matter distortion. 50W Kustom Defender tube amp. I'm wanting the chorus for some 80s style sound.

The Trading Post thread is to find out if anyone has anything they want to part with. This thread is to get help so I can figure out exactly what chorus I'm after. Trying different options is difficult because the only chorus in stock at the local music store is a Boss CH-1 and a TC Electronic Corona. I can hear what they sound like, but I don't have much to judge against.

The local pawn shops are good about letting me try stuff, but none of them have any chorus pedals. Tons of cheap distortion pedals, but no chorus.

What chorus would you recommend overall? I think the main use will be for 80s stuff like Def Leppard and the like. But if I can find other uses, like bluesy stuff, I'll certainly use it there, too.

Thoughts? Feelings? Hopes? Fears?

Well a Corona Chorus can pretty much do it all with its Tone Print ability. It's what is on my board.

He clearly states he has a low budget, why recommend a $180.00 (CDN) pedal?

I certainly enjoy my ch-1, and use it for 80's type sounds. The boss ce-5 is a common one too you can find for cheap. Check out some videos and such online and try to maybe see whats out there?

Some you can find for under 60 US used all day:

-Boss CH-1 and CE-5
-EHX Small Stone
-Ibanez CS9

Doh! Well, he states he can try it at the store. But I totally missed the mention...it's much too common on forums to recommend 'this is what i have, you should get it' or 'this is the expensive option so its better' and I jumped the gun. My bad.

Mini Corona Chorus would work in the budget i think, the toneprint editor will allow you to get creative with it too.

Aside from that, Visual Sound Liquid Chorus, Ehx small clone, Mxr m234, Hardwire cr7 are cheap on the used market.

Have you considered taking to EBay and going for Chinese clones?

Joyo and Caline and other brands can be had fairly cheap.... I'm talking $30 - $50 (CDN) for a brand new pedal. The other brands are a risk but can't go wrong with Joyo and Caline. And if you don't like them, at least you didn't pay a lot.

You can find used Coronas (the pedal, used beer is not good) on Reverb and Ebay all day long for good prices. I agree with the comment about the Tone Print editor and being able to get the sounds you want. The Boss CH-1 will get you the sounds you want too, it's not as versatile as the Corona, but it will do 80's chorus sounds as well and you can find them used pretty cheap. I'll beat Aceman to it and throw in the Digitech CF-7 Chorus Factory, it will also do everything you want and more and they are cheap on the used market with some searching but you have to run them on a power supply, I would recommend the OneSpot over a Boss type power supply for those. The other cool thing about the CF-7 is it has a model of the old analog TC Chorus/Flanger so you can get some cool although subtle flange sounds too, it's not as heavy a flange sound as a MXR or EH Electric Mistress, but cool none the less.

No worries Kamanda. Really I mentioned the corona simply because with Tone Print, you can dial it up to do whatever sound you want and there are literally dozens of tone prints to choose from... some specifically made to emulate classic pedals.

I bought my corona used for $90 at a local music store in brand-new condition. A Mini would be good, but not if you play live and like to change settings between songs. If it's a set-it-and-forget-it deal or you don't play live the mini would be great!

Yeah uh... those particular Coronas even brand new aren't anything to get excited about! Goes to show what brilliant marketing can do for a really really bad product!

I would have bet you would thrown down the Digitech, you did that on purpose didn't you!

Thanks All... there's been some really good suggestions on here. I've had a couple of forum brothers reach out to me on the Trading Post and via PM. One was a great offer...Electro Harmonics Stereo Electric Mistress at a really fair price. Just right on the upper range...I'm seriously thinking of that one, but again with the money. Eating is good, right?

Yeah, the Corona would be the first choice. (The pedal not the putrid beer) But I just can't swing that. It would be different if I actually made some money off my rig, but as a livingroom player, I have to be able to justify the cost.
I kind of ruled out the Joyo/Caline option as I am of the understanding that Chorus is one of those effects where you can't really get away with cheap. So I'm looking at more Name stuff used, which is roughly the same price.

Hey Pigbacon...(love that name, btw!) I like a wide range of songs, but being an 80s teen, that's kind of where my heart lives. Couple of Chorus songs I like: Boston - More than a feeling, Rush-Spirit of the Radio, Triumph-Magic Power. Bryan Adams-Run to You. Also pretty much the whole Def Leppard catalog - Hysteria, Pour some sugar on me, Photograph. Pick any song by Poison. And of course Crazy Train.

Ace, never thought of the Ibanez. Ya, I guess that WOULD go with the TS7, LOL! I may have to paint one so I can tell them apart :cool2: Never even thought of the DOD. This learning stuff is fun!

At this point, I'm going to see what's available, and compare prices. But thank you all, now I have a better feel for what I'm looking for.

I did a piece of artwork (pencil sketch) of a car for a guy. He had no cash, so I got a Pedal Train on trade, including soft case and 5 short cords.

The Hardwire chorus is a good one. Probably the best of the chorus' that you can find on a budget IMO. Another option is getting a Line 6 M5 and then you have all kinds of options. The chorus on my M9 is very good.

For the higher-end options, my favorites have been my Strymon Ola and TC SCF.

Usually, yes. But this particular application called for a little something different.

The IBANEZ CF7 (also a "CF7") is a cool pedal. standard Chorus and Flanger (switchable) with two modes - standard and whacked - for each. Four, counter, four pedals in one!

And with cool little tone lok buttons!
