Chuck Barry Dual Showmans

I was in my music business class today and we were looking at different artist contract "Riders" and in his it said he never brings an amp but who ever hires him has to get him Two dual Showman Fenders a backing band that knows his songs and a guitar. Does he still use Showmans today?

Re: Chuck Barry Dual Showmans

chucks had some ****tastic bands back him up over the years

Re: Chuck Barry Dual Showmans

Chuck is playing mostly smallish clubs these days and one Dual showman would be MASSIVE overkill much less 2 so I doubt that's still in his rider however I have never seen footage or Chuck using anything except a Fender amp.

I'd guess a Super Reverb or a Twin Reverb these days, even a tweed Bassman reissue...

Re: Chuck Barry Dual Showmans

My brother's band backed Chuck years ago at a large club in Canada .It was not a great experience. Chuck was not the most professional. He did not supply the band a set list, would not even tell them what song he was going to play but just launch into something and expect the band to follow. Even worse he did not tune his guitar with any of the band so my brother, the bass player had to tune on the fly, made it hard for the keyboard player. This was pretty much the usual for Chuck in those days. If you See Hail,Hail Rock and Roll with Keith Richards leading the band you will seeChuck try to change key mid song and Keith give him a nasty look and a big 'no' head shake.

Yeah, they talk about that in Hail Hail. They pretty much go over how Chuck would sign to play a gig, the rider would require a backing band that knows his songs, then he would show up 5 minutes before showtime, walk in with just a guitar, walk on stage, and just start playing songs. If that's not bad enough, he'd decide to change keys in the middle of songs, etc. Even Keith Richards commented how he'd gone to see Chuck play a number of times and how terrible it always was. From what I've read, he's not any better these days. Apparently it can be pretty awful.

Re: Chuck Barry Dual Showmans

What kind of music business class doesn't teach how to spell Chuck Berry's name correctly? :)

BTW, here's Chuck and John Lenin (lol!) on the Mike Douglas show. Check out Yoko's vocals and that weird warbling weirdness that she does whenever she stops playing the drum badly. :)

Yep.

That was pretty much the whole point of the Hail Hail movie. Keith trying to get Chuck in line and play with a decent band.

I've always thought that this show proved that Chuck could still get it right when he wanted to OR in this case HAD to. John looks pretty happy there doesn't he?

Re: Chuck Barry Dual Showmans

It's pretty sad, he plays here locally once a month and even if you paid me $20 to go and bought all my beer I'd rather sit on my couch.

I saw him right after I turned 21 and the show was just ok. I saw him about 5 years later and walked out. Incoherent rambling, forgot words, and several song screw ups.

Re: Chuck Barry Dual Showmans

if he's really such an egotistical jerk like you guys say, doesn't it make MORE sense that he'd want two overpowered Fender towers?

if i were Chuck Berry I would require twice the amplification.

Wow but two Marshall heads do seem like it would be a lil much. I wonder what model heads they were can't really see to well. That wasnt that bad of a performance

Oh goodness that was horrible. Guess old age has taken its toll or he just never practices anymore. And yup two heads and cabs im surprised he doesnt slave one to the other not like he would really need to in a place that size.

Re: Chuck Barry Dual Showmans

If I can still play at 86, let alone walk, I will be a happy dude..... If you watch longer clips from this show, it gets much worse... But again, he is old as old gets.
