Clapton strat pickup change

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Here's what I'm thinking:

N: "Middle" RW/RP Fat 50
M: "Standard" CS69
B: SSL-5 (or SSL-5T, up to you)

Reason, a standard Fender single cool is equivalent to a RWRP Duncan, so the standard CS69 and RWRP Fat 50's will cancel hum, then the Duncan is equivalent to a RWRP Fender, so it cancels hum with the middle. Of course if you'd prefer neck/bridge to cancel hum you'd need something different.

Personally, I LIKE the middle position on a Strat. Also, I've setup one Strat with non RWRP and the middle sounds are a little different, IMO. Of course sometimes you want to eliminate noise by any means so that noise cancelling position is great, especially clean!

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

The Schaller Mega Switch gives N & B combined when set to the middle position.

I would miss the middle pickup sound, it's very useful when I play with a lot of reverb with surf like runs.
I'd sacrifice the 2nd position instead, never liked it at all, with a megaswitch it's possibile.

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

if you want a humcancelling effect on 2nd & 4th position you have to take a rwrp middle pickup.

I don't like the hum cancelling effect above, I 'm a little paranoid and I feel I hear a slightly better sound if all the 3 pickups have the same polarity, I don't know if it's just autoinduced suggestion but, it works , so, for me, 3 normal pickups
Thanks for your reply,
I am tempted to go the way you say as I have been doing some research on the configuration in gilmours black strat.
At one time he did have a SSL 1C DG RP for noise cancelling, but at present all same polarity as are the signature versions

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

I have one more suggestion for the OP. Call or email David Allen @ D. Allen pickups. He makes a noiseless blade Strat size pickup. It was once called the Johnny Blade, but he no longer has a endorsement deal with Johnny Hiland, so he calls them something else. They have much closer to single coil tone that any noiseless ones I have ever heard. With this set I think you could get close to the Gilmour tone you seek, and can keep the Clapton electronics. There are demo videos on YouTube and they have gotten good reviews from guys that have played them over on the Strat-talk board. The Johhny Hiland video show him chicken picking and getting all kinds of Tele tones from a three pickup Tele with these in it. Dead quiet as well.

I don't miss it at all. I never use the middle pickup alone. But being a Tele player I do miss the neck and bridge pickups together. It's my favorite tone for chords and rhythm on a Tele.

Any ways the Schaller Mega Switch is the ticket...far as I'm concerned. Got it on both of my Strats.

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

look forward to your thoughts on the finished product

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Well I made a start on the pick guard yesterday but it has now gone backwards!
I was VERY unhappy with the quality of the 3 pots and 5 way switch so I have returned them and had a refund.
No way was I going to fit them on a genuine American strat !

What was wrong with them? I can't read the markings but they look like CTS vintage-style pots and a CRL switch to me, the same stuff that Fender ships in their guitars.

Yes they are CTS vintage style pots and also a CRL switch but they are not made to the same spec as those supplied to fender they are far inferior.
The seller eventually admitted that they were not fender spec.

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Just improving the screening as I won't be using noise canceling pup pairs.
Hopefully will strip the clapton mod out next weekend and prepare the guitar cavities with more emi screening20160903_164456.jpg

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Just remember that SD pickups and Fender's are wired RW/RP..so you will have to reverse the hot & ground on the SD to be in phase.

Re: Clapton strat pickup change

Some unexpected time off put to good use (I hope!)

What exactly was not to spec? I'm curious because there's only so much manufacturing variation in different models of these particular pieces, unless what you were sold was counterfeit.

For the record, all the CTS pots and CRL switches I use come from AllParts or in Fender retail package.
