Classic 30 chassy making a buzz

I took my Classic 30 apart today as there is a rattle inside the amp when i hit some low notes.... It's a buzz like there is a loose screw. At first i thought it was the tube retainer wire clips but after removing them the buzz/rattle is still there.... so i removed the amp from the cab and poked around.... I tightened all screws and could not find anything loose, but i also didn't want to remove the circuitboard to see whats underneath it. I'll leave that to a pro i guess... If i tap the metal chassy beside the tube sockets i can hear a metal sounding buzz like a spring buzzing.... It's driving me nuts. Any ideas/tips?

To my surprise i found little electronics were inside the amp.... Not much to them amps....

Mine has the same problem, it's tube rattle. Search for "Tom's Tube Tamer" on ebay.

Found it. Pretty easy install by the looks of it, I've heard nothing but good things about it from the Peavey forum.

Yeah, tube rattle is a common problem with those amps. It's an easy fix, either give Peavey a call or post a note over on the Peavey amp forum. One of the amp techs who posts there developed a tube retainer for the C30 that solves this problem.

Beyond the tube rattle, what's the review on that amp by you owners? I'm considering Ebay'g one as a portable alternative to the Soldano and 2X12. I'd change the speaker, drop some JJ tubes in it, and perhaps mod it out with some capacitors.

Mine is totally stock and I love it. Some great thick blues tone and I like the overdrive, no need for a pedal for blues/classic rock. Metal will definetly require a pedal of some sort though.

i've heard that about the tubes too...you need some kind of bracket/brace that goes around them!?

Would these be different tube retainers then the wire clips i have on the amp to hold the tubes in place? I bought the amp used and it came with the wire tube retainers which at the time i was told was not stock but an add on.... would that be true or does Peavey ship Classic 30's with them?

Also if anyone is thinking of buying a Classic 30 they are great! They can be carried in one hand, sound extremely loud and they sound great cranked!!!! Plus the clean channel is amazing. I do not like the sound of mine at practice volumes but once you turn it up to play with a drummer it rocks!!!!! The difference is day and night once you get the tubes hot!

Was my post just ignored? The wire retainers are not what is needed to stop this problem. You need a bolt on brace, called Tom's Tube Tamer, which is available on ebay for $19.95. Here's the link:

sorry about that.... I didn't see your link and assumed you meant the metal wire retainers i have. That thing looks cool. After playing with the C30 some more it sure looks like the trouble is the tube sockets and the metal chassy plate that are buzzing for sure. Thanks for the link.

Soon i'll have to retube this amp as well. When i bought it used it came with mis-matched tubes so i assume taht some are older and some are newer. What would be the best tubes for this amp? And there is no need to Bias this amp is there?

The amp is a fixed bias amp and has to be modded to allow for bias adjustments. I've heard nothing but good things about JJ EL-84's in the Peavey Classic series. If you email Bob over at www.eurotubes.com and tell him exactly what type of tone you are looking for he can set you up with what tubes you need.
